Might I recommend to the OP this very interesting early demo version of the song?

I like this version of Teenaged Wasteland (Yes, that is the correct name for this Pete Townsend performance) a bit better than the demo. But either way it’s cool to hear this variation of Baba by the composer.

Actually, I just found the clip I was thinking of on YouTube. On Won’t Get Fooled Again he used an organ and an EMS Putney.

Damn that ended way too soon.

Pearl Jam is a pretty prodigious coverer of that song. There are many examples on YouTube of them playing that live. I’m not a big fan of the guitar attempting to sub for the synth in the intro in their version, but Eddie Vedder’s vocals are generally well-suited to the power of that song.

Perhaps older versions use guitar for the synthesizer, but Boom Gaspar has been touring with Pearl Jam since the early 2000’s and balances out the song very well.

There are versions of them playing it from back in the 70’s –this is the best version I found of the boys – when Roger and Pete still had their voices and Keith still had his life.

The Who at Kilburn 2-disc DVD package includes that entire concert from 1977. It was The Who’s second to last performance with Keith Moon. The Won’t Get Fooled Again finale is killer on that one. There are also scattered clips of that concert and many other Who concerts on The Kids Are Alright.

Kilburn was recorded well but doesn’t capture that Hiwatt amp growl nearly as well as Live at Leeds.

I’ve seen that version and that is most certainly a guitar playing the intro keyboard part from the original song.
