Oh and I just found out today that my grandfather (who is a minister and performed the ceremony) led a religious prayer and sing-a-long before the reception while my new husband and I were off getting the requisite pictures. Considering his half of the family is very anti-religious, their behavior during the reception suddenly makes a lot more sense _cringe_ Family… ---

Since they were only about 5 out of the total 35 people it didn’t really make a difference, but I had been really hoping that his mom would get along with my family at least a little. This will make holidays a lot more complicated. ---

Wow. WOW. That’s incredibly anti-religious. To the point of rudeness. I understand it might not have been sensitive of your granfather to lead a prayer circle and all, but it’s not like you were singing “Amazing Grace” all through the reception or anything. As far as holidays, maybe it’s just me but I’ve never gotten the two sides of my family together for holidays. First, few people have houses big enough for that, and second, it’s much easier just to make dual appearances most of the time (or on holidays like Christmas, do the eve with one family and the day with the other). ---

[/QUOTE] My whole extended family is from South Dakota, where everyone knows The Doxology and “coming out” means admitting that you are an athiest. The wedding was in Oregon, the state with the lowest church attendence in the US. I probably should have expected something like this. Re: holidays, his blood-related family consists of just him and his mom. For various reasons real and imagined, she is estranged from all but one member of his extended family. “His side” therefore was her current boyfriend, her ex-boyfriend (who pretty much raised **Suavecaveman** from ages 6-16) and 3 other of her close friends. So it would have been a simple thing to bring her along when we went to my folk’s for Christmas (she lives in town, they only live 1.5 hours away). But she has many emotional problems anyway - I’ve always known that dealing with her will be a struggle. Luckily **caveman** has excellent boundaries in place. That was one of the things that attracted me to her in the first place: how well he balances his responsibilities to his mother while maintaining his own sanity and life. **Ellen Cherry** thanks! I was blissfully unaware of most of this during the actual wedding day, so yes I was very happy.
