> How is that not better than getting frosting all over your fingers while trying to remove a grease-soaked circle of paper from your food and holding a wet piece of cake in your hands while shoving something that’s bigger than your mouth at your own face?

I can’t believe no one has mentioned this part yet.

Look, if your cupcake wrapper is greasy, someone is making your cake wrong. Or getting super cheap liners, I guess. But the point is that the paper is still stiff when I make mine.

And holding a wet cake in your hand? How the hell are you eating your cupcakes? Are you unwrapping completely, then eating? I unwrap half, fold the paper under, hold the papered part on the other side, and eat my way across the cupcake. The paper set up [is somewhat like this.](http://www.theavidappetite.com/storage/recipes/banana%20cupcake%20unwrap%20small.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1297254259903) No sticky fingers, no mess.

I like cupcakes. I’m the kind of person that likes to have lots of kinds of delicious things over one big delicious thing. Cupcakes mean I can go to the bakery and get six different kinds of delicious cake to try, rather than buying one big ol cake.

I agree with the OP. I would much rather eat a slice of cake. A plate and a fork takes no time to wash, vso that’s not a problem. I like frosting, so an inch of frosting on 3 inches of cupcake just gets caught in my throat.

Look, you can keep pretending that you look graceful while eating a cupcake and don’t get crumbs and sticky shit everywhere, but I’m calling the world on it. The emperor has no clothes.

And there’s nothing stopping a cake store from cutting 6 slices of cake for you and putting them in a box. Long live normal cake!

But then my cake slice is going to get all dried out because it has more surface area exposed to the air.

Now I have to make a cake. I’ve got to decide between angel food or devil’s food. This thread has made me hungry.

My problem is that otherwise competent bakers are concentrating on these abominations when they ought to be making pies, pastries and cookies.

Cupcakes and even cake are way down on the list for me.

I wonder if the cupcake shop is open right now…

Cupcake eating tip: Gently break the bottom half of the cake off. Flip it over to the crumby side and place that on top of the frosting. Now it’s like a whoopie pie and you can eat it like a cupcake sandwich. You still get crumbs everywhere, but at least that helps contain the icing. Or frosting. Whatever.

> My big beef with cupcakes is that of all the trendy new cupcake places that opened up in the last few years, almost all of them rely soley on the pretty icing to sell them and the cupcake itself is a dry tasteless affair.

Word. They will all be out of business in a year or three. All icing and no cake. The cupcakes at the grocery store are as good or better for less cost.

Long live cakes!!

Muffin tops, or muffin stumps? Suzannes in the SF Bay Area used to sell the tops. Another fad that died out.
