It’s not considered appropriate to go to the racist well for comedy in mainstream America. There are hosts of laws and social mores protecting black civil rights. The battle there is largely won.
Gays, on the other hand, have no protection, and it’s entirely accepted that the largest religious movements and political parties in America use demonization of homosexuals as their guiding principle. Whether homosexuals are people is considered a topic for “civil” debate, and to accuse the side that does not believe in the personhood of a certain class of being Nazis is the only thing that will bring condemnation.
So yeah, black civil rights doesn’t compare to gay civil rights in 2011. Not at all.
