I've had my phone # for 40 years. How long have you had yours?

My parents have had their number since 1978. It’s been through one house move and the addition of a two digit prefix.
My SO’s parents have had theirs since, uh, 1969 there or thereabouts. Theirs has had a three digit prefix added.
I’ve had the same cellphone number since 1995. It’s had a 7 added, but so has everyone else’s.

“When we had our phone installed, we wanted to keep the old black dial phone left behind, but it belonged to the phone co. It had been leased all those years.”

The same thing happened to my parents. They had the same telephone from 1954 through 1982, when it finally gave up the ghost. My mother contacted the telephone company to get it fixed and was told “Fixed? They haven’t made these phones for 20 years.” It was a very heavy, bakelite thing and I wanted to keep it. Sorry, the telephone company said, it belongs to us. I asked what they were going to do with it. Their reply “Throw it away, I’m sure, but no, you can’t have it.”

When I was a kid our phone didn’t have a dial you just picked it up and talked to the operator.

A friend of mine had the number 1
The house he lived in had belonged to the police chief when they installed the first phones.

Once when we were away on a scout camp he took a long time to convince the operator he had the right number!

My parents have had the same number since they bought their house in 1954. They also have one of the original wall-mounted rotary phones from 1954, with the label “NEptune 7 xxxx” on it. I used to beg them to replace it since it was such a pain to dial on, but now it’s kind of cool.

My grandparents built their house in the teens and have had the same number ever since they had a phone installed. So that’s a minimum of seventy years. I wish I could recall the exchange, but I can only remember asking my mom why Grampie’s phone number had letters too.

My aunt lives there now, and eventually my cousin will. That number is never going to be retired.

I’ve sort of had it for 18 years. I first got my current number in 1986. I moved out of town from1993-1996 and couldn’t take it with me. When I moved back I asked it if was available and it was so I’ve had it since.
