Just a few moments ago I was talking to my roommate about the trailer for Lord of the Rings. He gave me a confused look like “What are you talking about” The bastard actually has no clue what Lord of the Rings is about. I thought he was pulling my leg…but after repeated attempts to explain who J.J.R Tolkien is and Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf…and the rest, he still gives me this dumb look. He does know what Lord of the Flies is though. The man is 31 years old and he doesn’t know…how is this possible? I feel like grabbing my big book of LotR and smacking him upside his ignorant-I lived in NewBrunswick all my life-brain. ---

Ok, you know what, Lord of the Rings is not the be-all and end-all of literature! Just because somebody hasn’t heard of it is no reason to get all uppity. I mean, come on, people have different interests, backgrounds, upbringings, etc. “How is this possible?” Give me a break! It’s not like the BIBLE or something. It’s hardly the best selling book of all time. It’s very well-loved by those who love it, but get over it already! If you’d said he’d never heard of BOOKS, then maybe your self-righteousness would be excusable, but you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. ---

What I find amazing is that most people can’t calculate a field strength tensor when given the starting and endpoints of an electron and it’s initial charge. I mean, how stupid can people be? **The Thief** , in the entire history of the world there have probably been one billion books published. I have to admit that it surprises me when I learn that some people have never heard of Tolkien or The Lord of the Rings-- just as I’m surprised when I encounter people who don’t know what Star Wars is, or who The Beatles were. That last one actually happened-- my boss had _no idea_ who John, Paul, George and Ringo were until we explained it to her one day at lunch. There are some elements of popular culture that seem awfully hard to miss. I’m not judging anyone because of it; my boyfriend has zero interest in the LOTR movie hype, and has never read the books, and I certainly don’t love him any less. It just gives me the opportunity to introduce him to something he might end up liking. ---
