Reading some reviews for this movie made me think immediately of A Rose for Emily written by Faulkner.
Am off work today and watched it via Netflix.
And the Academy Award for Best Actor this year should have gone to…Jack Black.
What a surprisingly great movie and what a performance from him. He isn’t winking at the camera or hinting that this is all fake. He was 100% Bernie and I loved it.
This movie just cracked into my top movies of 2012.
See it, everyone.

I watched Bernie last night after seeing this thread.
Very enjoyable movie! Jack Black did an excellent job with the character. I really loved his walk: pants pulled up over his navel, arms at sides with hands bent.
I agree, he should have received some nods for his performance.
I highly recommend the film.
I would go nomination as well; I have to admit that Denzel Washington gave the performance of the year in Flight.
Watched this a few weeks ago after seeing this thread. Very enjoyable. One of those, “Huh, so he can actually act,” moments.
TreacherousCretin mentions that there’s another thread about Bernie but I couldn’t find it, so I’ll zombify this one.
The real-life Bernie is being released from prison, which wouldn’t have much to do with the movie, except that one of the conditions of his release is that he go live with Bernie director Richard Linklater! Truth continues to be stranger than fiction.
(Warning, it’s still a depressing story, every bit of it, but it doesn’t affect how much I love the wonderfully weird and funny black comedy of a movie)

It is. And it’s not a gimmick – it’s a legitimately well told story that just so happens to take place over 12 actual years. It would still be a great movie if they shot it in one year with 12 different sets of actors.
