My feeds for the past few days have been full of Jack Black’s Ozzy tribute at the Power to the People Festival. Mrs. Thumper despises him, so I had to wait until the house was empty to watch this. I secretly want to be him. “A fat old white guy acting like a teenager,” you say? - yup, that’s me to a tee. And I love watching teenagers (including Tom Morello’s incredibly talented son) playing the music I loved at their age, and playing it well. Absolutely rapturous. Cute story about _The Wizard_. When my daughter was about 11 we went to a local deli to get some sandwiches for lunch. This deli always had music playing from an iPod, so it largely reflected the owner’s tastes. While we ere waiting for our sandwiches to be made, _The Wizard_ came on. My daughter spontaneously started dancing around the aisles and said “Dad, this is so cool! What is it?” I told her it was Black Sabbath, and it came out when I was only 2. “Cool!” So we went home and after a little Googling, I pulled out an A harp and told her to go get her flute. She had only been playing the flute for a year, but with me blowing the harp she learned the harmonica part to the song completely by ear. I said, “Take THAT Katy Perry!” Then I got my bass out and we spent the afternoon playing along with the record. It’s the only time we ever jammed together, and consequently _The Wizard_ is my all-time favorite Sabbath song. ---

When you combine it with amazing musicians who are very young it puts the spotlight on their talent, so I’m pretty sure it’s intentional and a key ingredient in the ‘secret sauce’. Anyway, it made me incredibly happy to watch it several times. ---

My Jack Black story. I was browsing in a bookshop once and overheard two of the staff talking. “My dad is going to drop in today. If I’m out the back please come and get me.” “How will I know that it’s your dad?” “He looks exactly like Jack Black. It’s unbelievable.” So, a while later, I spotted her talking to an older guy who, admittedly, looked vaguely Jack Blackish. So I rushed over to them and excitedly said, “Sorry to interrupt you Jack but I just had to let you know how much pleasure I have received from your movies and music over the years. Thanks a lot.” Before he could tell me that he wasn’t in fact Jack Black I had turned and headed off out of the shop.
