Some people are very integrated with their real self and their online self. Combine that with a sensitive nature and some people can be truly hurt by online insults. Whether that’s healthy/normal or not is a whole different story. ---

They also abuse children and murder people. So that means Dopers are supposed to do same because ‘it’s done’? ---

I was thinking about this question of what’s socially acceptable. I know I’ve tried to explain this to QG before, but I’m going to try one more time. Society is not a monolithic entity. We all live in numerous microcosmic societies: our families, our workplaces, our community, state, nation, etc. The SDMB is a society unto itself. It has rules that have worked with good success for quite some time. It allows for a BBQ Pit wherein people can flame each other, call names, be nasty. This may not jibe with the society of your family, or your little knitting circle, or whatever you are using as your standard of what “society” is and what’s acceptable in it. That’s just too fucking bad. There is a different set of rules operating here, and you should try a little harder to accept that. Or don’t engage in the behavior you find objectionable. But outside of breaking the SDMB’s society’s rules, no one is actually doing anything wrong here. This is an internet message board. This is the way we do things here. End of story. ---

And I don’t believe anyone is saying they are ‘supposed to’, they are saying ‘they can’ and the rules here do appear to allow that. So what is the issue here for you? Fluiddruid or Giraffe–can we get a ruling on this? Is it okay to abuse children and murder people here in the pit? I personally think this runs afoul of the wish death or harm on another poster rule 😃 ---

Is the phrase “tilting at windmills” beginning to seem apropos, **Quiddity**? Some people simply relish behaving cruely and will defend with all manner of obfuscation, disingenuity, immature semanticism and dancing-on-the-head-of-a-pin their justifications for doing so. It pains me to see you expending such effort talking into a dead phone. ---

Do "I’ do that—have you ever read me behaving cruelly? You justify your behavior because the poster was RedFury as if that is justification for your actions. Why is that acceptable? Without that knowledge of that feud how would any reader know that you feel it is justified. Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn’t. I think you should be able to call him what you like within the limits set up here–and obviously the powers that be feel the same way as they didn’t call you out on it. Luckily my opinion isn’t what is used as the line here in the Pit, nor should it, nor should yours or Quiddity’s. All anyone here has asked for is where is this line you keep referring to. I have reported posts that I personally felt went beyond my personal level of acceptability. Some the powers that be agreed with and others they did not. That is the way it works. Perhaps you guys should open your own Message Board and write your own rules. I do think the phrase ‘tilting at windmills’ is apropos here–but at your end. You refuse to engage in any true dialogue because you likely know your position has no merit. I (unlike the three or four times you have stated such) am out of this thread. This is getting old, and you guys can have you fun trying to change the Pit. Won’t happen and I can guarantee that next week and the week after there will be plenty of nasty stuff posted here. Some I will read and some I won’t–life will go on. ---
