> IMHO, jag-wahr for American English, jag-u-are for British English. “Jag-wire” is as stupid and annoying as “reel-a-tor” and “jool-er-ee.”

Or it means you’re from central Pennsylvania (which is the way I heard it growing up there). On Saturdays, you could warsh your jagwire in the driveway, though you wouldn’t want to do it in feb-yoo-airy (too cold). And you’d want to dry it off rate away so it wouldn’t get streaks.

Do I think it’s silly? of course I do (and I’ve gotten rid of the worst of the central Pennsyvania pronunciations myself, though some still creep in). But it’s no worse than any other regional pronuciation, for the most part (though some of them DO make me go nucular!).

“Jagwar.” Since it’s a Western Hemisphere animal, I think it a bit silly of the Brits to have a different pronunciation.

I knew some people from Pittsburgh who, instead of saying they were pulling your leg, would say “I’m just jagging your wires.”

Dunno if folks still say that. But if they do, they should stop.
