James Franco is the most overexposed actor working today: Agree or Disagree?

Since I dislike Rogen and Cumberbatch intently and they seem like they’re everywhere, I think I need to agree.

I think I’ve seen him in 1 movie since Spiderman. So, he’s overexposed in the media compared to how much I’ve actually seen him in work- not quite Paris Hilton or George Hamilton-level, yet more famous for being famous (to me) at this point.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that Benedict Cumberbund guy in anything. No, that’s right, he was in that August Osage County movie.

Watch Freaks & Geeks if you want to understand why James Franco is considered attractive by females.

…erm, …who is this James Franco, I have never seen this person in anything at all - ever

…erm…you seem oddly…proud…of that.

Did you look for the underwater three-way scene in Spring Breakers with James Franco, Selena Gomez and Rachel Korine?

I’m slightly bemused that someone I’ve never seen or heard of should be noted for overexposure.

Is that a good thing? Should I be grateful? Am I missing something special?

I like him for the reasons I’ve already mentioned, which may or not work for someone else. I was just bemused someone who’s never heard of him would come into a thread about him just to say they’d never heard of him, but I forgot what the Subject Line was. You’re right for being bemused, it is funny. He obviously is not overexposed except to those who look for it, and might be bothered.

If you’re not into movies you wouldn’t know him from there. He’s been in many, both serious and comedy, both small indies and big blockbusters. If you’d never watched the TV show Freaks and Geeks, you wouldn’t know him from that. If you don’t keep up with/watch the Oscars, you wouldn’t know him from either when he was nominated for Best Actor (for 127 Hours), or the time he hosted with Anne Hathaway (it was kindofa disaster, he’s good at a lot of things but hosting awards shows is not ones of them). If you’re not exposed to entertainment news/gossip sites/shows, you wouldn’t know him from there. There’s any number of reasons why you or anyone might not have heard of him. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Where is everyone seeing this Cumberbatch guy? I didn’t even know who he was and had to look him up on imdb. The only thing I’ve ever seen him in was Star Trek. I don’t watch Sherlock Holmes and I don’t intend on seeing his current movie and I haven’t even seen any ads for it.
Where is he being overexposed?

I don’t know, man. I went to buy socks at WalMart for my kid for Christmas. The guy that rang me up was Johnny Depp. I drove back home and stopped at the auto parts place for windshield washer jizz. The guy behind the counter was Johnny Depp. I hit the Drive-Thru at the Taco Bell and the guy at the window was Johnny Depp.

They don’t know, they’re making it up as they go along. Maybe rather than snarling at actors for doing their jobs they should quit hanging around sites that write about actors doing their jobs, since actors are expected, as part of their contracts, to promote the work they do via interviews and personal appearances such as premieres and special screenings. They could blame the publicists and quit watching entertainment news. Unless the actors’ very name in credits also counts toward being “overexposed” in which case they just have way too much time on their brain.

That said, Cumberbatch’s movie is a very good movie and it and he’s getting a lot of additional attention as part of awards season. He can’t help that his name is being bandied about a lot. Since the movie will be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, and he’s going to get nominated and is arguably the favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar, people who think Cumberbatch is “overexposed” now might want to bury their heads for the next couple of months.

I’m almost in the same boat. I knew he was in the (first) Spiderman movies, because I had seen them, but beyond that, I don’t think I’ve ever seen another movie with him in it. At least, I couldn’t name another he’s been in.

That’s a fair point, I suppose. My Festivus grievance with Franco isn’t how much exposure he gets, so much as the fact that I find him to be a self-important twit. Admittedly I base that on only two things (his irritating interview on the Colbert Report, and his terrible poem about Asheville), so I could be wrong, but I’m way too lazy to try to get more information about him.

You can’t let Tim Burton control your life like that. You’ll end up claymation.
