Also, McDonald’s [at least according to this](http://animalrights.about.com/b/2011/10/26/mcdonalds-french-fries-still-not-vegetarian.htm), still uses animal-based products in their French fries. So, while there was that lawsuit that settled in 2002, apparently McDonald’s hasn’t changed its use of beef derivatives in fries (in the US).

> [@](#):
>
> With regard to our French fries, any customer in the U.S. who contacts McDonald’s USA to ask if they contain beef flavoring is told “yes.” For flavor enhancement, in the U.S., McDonald’s French fry suppliers use a very small amount of beef flavor as a natural flavoring during the par-frying process at the potato processing plant. In the restaurant, the French fries are cooked in vegetable oil.
>
> In addition, we have no plans to change the way we prepare our French fries in the U.S. However, it is important to know that our French fries are prepared differently in other countries.

That is from an article dated October 2011.

However, I suppose it depends on whether “beef flavoring” means “contains beef product.” Their own website shows “natural beef flavoring” in the ingredients list, but only states that the flavoring contains hydrolized wheat and hydrolized milk as starting ingredients. (Which would make it, at least, not vegan.) No mention of any other possible natural flavoring sources, just what is required for allergen information.

> His disappointment is that he did the exact same trick in the UK and the kids were revolted, and he expected a similar response here. What does this say about our kids?

It says “our” kids aren’t the squeamish, dainty, thin-blooded, foppish dilettantes that he dug up in the UK\*.

It’s perfectly safe to eat meat. I’m proud that “our” kids aren’t food-wasting sissies who panic at the sight of something slightly “icky”.

\*And frankly, I wonder how hard he had to look to find such a bunch of twee little wimps. I doubt they’re representative of the youth of the UK.

I have no knowledge of Jamie Oliver, and from that video he looks like a complete idiot, obsessed with appearances. There’s notghing disgusting or gross about the food he cooked up, and I bet it’s pretty tasty. Heck, it’s even unhealthy, as long as you don’t gorge on it or down nuggets constantly - just like any other oily food. He didn’t just get humiliated, he was pwned by children. He possiobly should thik about it, but I doubt that outcome.

There’s a certain breed of judgemental foodist who fret and fros over the aesthetics more than the actual food. This kind of person is shallow and silly, and likely to spend a lot of uneccessary time cooking overpriced cuisine. If you cook, it should be because you love good food or need something in particular, not because you’re too snobbish for the ordinary.

And I sincerely hope that anytime Jamie Oliver goes to buy sausage, he is slapped hard in the face by the butcher.

>
> Ground steak is “okay” but it just isn’t as good as a real burger, at least not to my tastes.

I like it because I can cook beautiful bloody rare burgers.

Bumping this thread to mention that the USDA is [purchasing](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/05/pink-slime-for-school-lun_n_1322325.html?ref=mostpopular) seven million pounds of pink slime for school cafeterias.

Responding to say that the little bastards deserve no better. IMHO.

And they will love it and ask for more. And we, as parents, will look at it and realize that, though superficially disgusting, there is nothing unwholesome about it. With honey-mustard sauce, please.

ABC World News did a story about pink slime last night too. Very alarmist - “This was only good enough for dog food before!” At least they skipped the step of putting a steak in a clothes dryer.

but he had a good excuse: he was hungover.

[Story](http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/jamie-oliver-snaps-after-being-asked-about-weight-gain-201283)

The reporter was Australian, so ‘hungover’ is probably an excuse she totally accepts.

More meat. Less cows. Less cows. More enviroment. 🙂

> They’re more rational?

Exactly. It’s nice that, for once, our side of the pond is the one that isn’t buying the woo.

If there are health concerns, fine. But the irrational idea that something that was “gross” to make tastes bad is ridiculous. The kids saw how it was made, saw that the results were the chicken nuggets they liked, and made the rational judgement that, despite looking gross, the food would taste good.

And, BTW, while McDonald’d does use ground up rib meat, it does not use all the stuff Jamie showed in the nuggets–and, now that I’m older, I think they don’t taste as good as a result.

That’s a pretty underhanded thing he does, pouring _liquid ammonia cleaner_ right over the meat. That’s pushing the boundaries of exaggeration into outright lying.

Jamie is slimier than anything in this concocted controversy. I wonder if Cargill or McDonald’s could sue for libel? Maybe next he’ll try to get Coke to change its recipe from high fructose corn syrup to cane sugar by calling HFCS “yellow ooze”.
