Strictly speaking, no, that wasn’t Japan’s goal in WW2, using the conventional defined boundaries of WW2, i.e. September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. It had been their goal to take over and control all of China prior to WW2 when they had invaded in 1937, and going further back to the occupation of Manchuria in 1933. The goal of Japan in WW2 was to break the embargo of oil imposed upon it by the United States and other nations in response to Japan’s war in China so that they would be able to continue their war in China. With the flow of oil to Japan cut, it was facing a collapse of its economy and its ability to continue the war in China.
China itself was relatively a rather quiet theater during Japan’s involvement in WW2 from December 7th, 1941-September 2, 1945. The only major offensive during this time period was Operation Ichi-Go which was launched in response to attacks on Japan by US B-29s operating from bases in China. The war between China and Japan is better known as the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937-45. An interesting side note to it is thatGermany had long backed the KMT in China both economically and militarily which didn’t fully end until ~mid 1938 when Hitler went with backing Japan.
