Japanese Internment

Umm… First of all, I’m not the one that wrote the OP. A TINY bit of research on your part would have cleared that up.

Second, a TINY bit of asking for clarification of the OP would have cleared up any other misunderstandings. But you’re correct, people didn’t try to figure out what he meant, they reacted. They assumed, drew unfounded conclusions, and posted inflamatory crap. Really, can’t we rise above that?

I don’t think the OP is a racist, I do think the OP showed an almost callous amount of naivete in his wording.

And I was about to make a topic about language sensitivity killing legit discussions driven only by curiosity, like about gender reassignment. I’m not a PC cop in the least.

Agreed. But I didn’t have a terribly hard time getting to the root of his question. Apparently other people did, though.

I’ve been by there - it’s definitely a beautiful area but keep in mind that it’s a desolate wilderness. You’re on the way to Death Valley. The first time I drove by (on the way to Mount Whitney) I thought “It’s gorgeous but I can see why they put a concentration camp here - even if you hop a fence you are in the middle of nowhere and if you go wandering off you’ll probably die”.

I’m sorry if I missed someone else raising this point, but I just wanted to note that in place of internment on Hawaii, the islands operated under martial law after 1941. Conveniently, the U.S. Supreme Court found the martial law unconstitutional… in 1946.
