Jazz/Funk of the Seventies

Average White Band?

Sly Stone and company

David Sanbourn had some funky tracks.

Brothers Johnson: Strawberry Letter 23, I’ll Be Good To You, Stomp, Light Up the Night…
Heatwave: Groove Line, Boogie Nights… (Rod Temperton’s [Thriller, Off The Wall] old band)

There’s some great stuff in this thread, I’ll be sure to check it out. Thanks a lot, everyone.

Not '70s but the Dave Coz cover of “Linus and Lucy” should be up your alley. It’s on 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas.

One of my favorite albums along these lines is Root Down by Jimmy Smith. JOS killing on the B3 with a relentless waka-waka rhythm guitar.

As mentioned previously, anything by Billy Preston, The Crusaders. For a more European jazz-funk-porno soundtrack feel, check out Novello.

For newer funk/jazz mash-ups, I like some of what John Zorn does, especially on Naked City and O’o.
