Jazz/fusion discussion

Fine. You have convinced me. You are the King of All Musical Knowledge and I doff my topper to you.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to have my ears surgically removed and sewn up, so I don’t accidentally soil any music by even accidentally listening to it. Then I shall have all my nerve ending cauterized so I don’t even feel the beat through the floor.

Eve, you know I absolutely adore you with all of my heart, but I have to widen my eyes and drop my jaw at your comments.

I’m learning jazz improv at my weekly lesson with Mr. Sax Machine. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to learn. It’s totally mathematical, logical and fast paced. People playing improv aren’t just playing “whatever they feel like playing” - it takes a lot of practice, knowledge and skill to be good.

And since I know you love Mr. Cole Porter, have you noticed most of the people playing his songs have an improvised solo?

P.S. I’ll write more on this later - keep up the good stuff Uke and Moe!

NO! Eve!!! COME BACK!!! HE DIDN’T MEAN IT!!! PLEEEEEEZE!!

So. Who’s this Marlene Dietrich? She work with you?

Uh, oh. Eve, listen, I didn’t read your post before sending mine, so the comments I wrote were made before you surgically sewed up your ears.

We’re just talking opinion here, please don’t censor yours from us!

Love and kisses and lesbianism,
Melanie

I can’t heeeeaarrrr you . . . .

NO EVE!!

Oh she did it. Cursed you cruel world!

BTW, I don’t know if anyone’s noticed but this thread’s replies to views ratio is one of the best out there now. WAHOO!!!

Oh yeah, jazz, fusion, music and stuff like that. (remembering to stay on topic)

I noticed Kenny G was mentioned.

Here’s Pat Metheney’s take on Mr. Gorelick.

Ouch. I had to put my winter coat on to read that. I of course agree with Pat’s musical criticisms on G’s ability, but boy that was harsh. I don’t agree with Pat’s decision to offer his opinion to the world. Sure I understand his frustration and envy, Pat being one of the greatest guitar geniuses (hey saxface, am I spelling that right?) of all time and earning probably only a small fraction of what Kenny G makes, but such is the nature of popular music. Sorry Pat, I don’t believe in putting down anyone’s music. And as far as taking issue with overdubbing over Armstrong’s tune, it shouldn’t be an issue. The fans who know music don’t respect Kenny G anyway and won’t listen to it. The fans who listen to Kenny G probably don’t know who Pat Metheny is because they’re not jazz fans but pop fans.

BTW anyone catch Pat on his tour a few months ago. I saw him at the Knit and almost had to get my jaw surgically put back into place it was dropped so far. He is good…

Eve, open your ears for a moment, I think you’ll like what I have to say. I completely agree about the whole improv thing. It SUCKS! A big honkin’ one, at that! (Sorry to those I’ve offended with my bad taste. :))

Have you ever smelled food cooking, and the aroma was so incredible that you just had to have some of whatever it was? You take a big forkful, pop it in your mouth with the highest of expectations towards liking it and have to spit it out almost immediately, that’s how disgusting it tastes to you? So much for going in with an open mind…

I went to see Chick Corea and Gary Burton in concert a couple of months ago. (In fact, I dragged Catrandom to see it, too.) I can’t remember ever hating a concert more. I have seen some awesome performances where it was obvious that the performers spent a lot of time putting the show together so it would be entertaining for the audience to watch, not just good music to listen to (for that I can pop in a CD). This crap we had to sit through was like being in the wings of their rehearsal hall and listening to some random jam session they were having. We hated it. A lot.

And being a lover of jazz (hey, I grew up in St. Louis where jazz and blues rule!), and knowing the reputations of Corea and Burton, I was extremely excited and enthusiastic about seeing them live. I ended up shaking my head in utter disbelief and feeling very disappointed.

Eve, if you want to see a rockin’, kick-ass concert that will have you on your feet dancing (seriously - the whole audience was dancing in their seats and the aisles by the end of the show), don’t miss Waldemar Bastos next time he’s in New York.

Oh, and just so this isn’t an entirely negative reply more befitting The Pit — I love Jelly Roll Morton, Uke!

I agree with Shayna that improvisational jazz is garbage. *Most of the time.{/i] But when it works, it can blow you away.

I still remember so well the night my wife and I went to see “Man of La Mancha” at the Royal Alex Theatre about 20 years ago. Afterwards, we went to George’s Spaghetti House, a well known jazz hangout. The Moe Kauffman Trio was there, and they did some improv work that simply brought the house down. Even my wife got caught up in it, and she hates jazz.

Yeah, it’s rare, but it happens.

If your unfamilar with the Chick Corea of the 70’s, please don’t let that experience be the basis for your opinion of him. I agree wholeheartedly with you. I went to see Chick with Origin a year and a half ago (now this is possibly my favorite musician anywhere in any genre, or at least in my top 5, that we’re talking about) and I was sooooooo bored and utterly dissappointed. There was absolutely no energy at all, the phrases were like long run on sentences saying nothing, and it was just completely uninteresting music. His stuff in the 70’s, all the Return to Forever albums, the mad-hatter, the leprechan, my spanish heart, now he sings…, etc. are IMHO absolutely incredible. Not to mention his work with Bela Fleck.
