Jonathan Chance has deemed it fit to close the latest [gun control debate thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=879901&page=9) by declaring it “[dead](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=21792694&postcount=435)”. I don’t know if that’s mod humor or a fitting end to the usual morass. Not a complaint. Just a 🙂 ---

Man, I could have phrased that better, couldn’t I? Honestly, given the rising vitriol and the endless succession of reports I figured calling a time out was best. Hopefully the participants can step back and rethink their approach to the debate. ---

Basically, the thread had, again, fallen into the same old endless wrangle about the 2nd Amendment that we’ve done over and over again. Most of the discussion that had a point already had been said on both sides, and it was a good thread until the final 2 pages. I think you pulled the plug at a good time, especially since, from my part, I know I was on thin ice with my temper rising…and I doubt I was the only one. To the OP of both this thread and that one, I’d say you got quite a lot of input and having that thread continue would have ruined it. Again, FWIW and IMHO and all. ---

Probably a good call. A note or a lite-warning would probably have gotten lost in the shuffle. A time-out is a little harder to “not notice”. ---

And considering that it has been stated often, in that thread and others, that gun confiscation means bloodshed, what Bone is saying here, what I am certainly hearing, is that we are lying about our intentions in order to get gun owners killed. Actually that whole post is pretty jerkish, full of “potshots” at other posters. Maybe the thread should have been closed at that point, and saved us the frustration of the next 400 posts trying to explain, against more and more hostility, hijacks, and attempts at derailment, that that is not a fair assessment of our position. ---

And being pretty much in the middle between both extremes I felt everyone kept it pretty much on point and polite. But today this is one of those topics where too many people in this country, not just this board, let their tempers flare and communication breaks down in an endless torrent of “oh yeah?
