But with “Washington” and “1864” in the clue, the Jeopardy crew would easily be accused of being deliberately deceptive if they tried to assert the response should have been something about Ibsen (or some other similarly-famous contemporary). ---

I couldn’t remember if it’s “My …” or “Our …” Also, it seemed like a long run from 1864 until April 1865, so the year seemed wrong. I wonder if it was ever staged after that day. Anywhere. ---

Given the general era, my first thought was “oh, they must be getting at the play Abraham Lincoln was watching when he was assassinated” but when I thought about the specific year and date, that threw me off. I thought, why would they specify something that happened in January 1864 as a clue to something that happened more than a year later? Edit: which I see is a point @JohnGalt made too. ---

Yeah, I think if you asked everyone in America “What was the name of the play Lincoln was watching when he was shot?” the vast majority would have no idea. Among people who might qualify for Jeopardy!, the percentage would surely be higher, but I’m guessing nowhere close to 95%. As for me, I said “My American Cousin.” Close, but no cigar. ---

If it had been anything other than Our American Cousin I would’ve been stunned.
