Corbyn definitely beat expectations but the expectations were so low in large part because he has been such a woeful leader. And Labour is a party which won three election in a row not that long ago. They should not be treating a defeat as some kind of major victory. Corbyn is still a fairly unpopular leader with an approval rating of around 35%. This election was more a vote against the woeful May than a ringing endorsement of Corbyn.
I’d like to see the next round of opinion polls actually. I suspect Corbyn’s - and Labour’s - approval ratings will increase.
A conviction, people-orientated politician running a short campaign based on his own manifesto is a very long way from the skills needed to lead a party - imo, while ‘leadership’ came up during the election Corbyn didn’t actually have to do much leading. It remains an issue.
What I would say is Labour made some super-smart strategic decisions in the last 7 weeks, and that is new (they are usually weak on that), and JC would have had final approval on that. So, that’s something …
As his opponents in the party made clear, whatever happens, Corbyn owns this result: BOOM!
The early “leaking” of the manifesto turned out well, for a start. It allowed a few potential landmines to be defused before the official launch. I was impressed by the campaign in general though. Calm and measured works!
The boy done good, as they say.
For me was they way they harnessed potential in the yoof, who you simply cannot reach by conventional means i.e. canvassing.
No one got it, esp. journalists asking Corbyn what he was doing in safe Labour seats at the end of a campaign, that was he so concerned about the core vote he had to be there … They missed the point entirely, everyone did - except those who paid attention to the Bernie Sanders campaign.
Labour created a happening, an event, the movement of the moment, the late surge no one my age saw - like the band you have to like this week. It was entirely on social media; Labour portrayed massive events full of energy and chants. That’s how you get to the yoof, and God it worked beautifully.
It worked especially for people like this brilliant new MP in my next door constituency - this MP is going to help me try to pull of a valuable social project
What is this “yoof” stuff, some kind of ethnic stereotype?
dunno
The big one was to let the Tories keep on making those mistakes.
It’s how the British spell “yoot.”
You know… for the kids!
After hearing him speak, he seems to have a completely different style compared to Trump. It’s more of an appeal to an intelligent left leaning firebrand faction compared to the drunks who just left a cracker barrel.
