One thing I see a lot in this thread that kinda bothers me is that somehow hitting on somebody or flirting with somebody automatically equals sleazeball dirtbag potential stalker rapist baby-stomping Obama-Bush-Hitler. Geez people. You can talk to somebody and make your intentions known, sexual or otherwise, without being a creep or a jerkwad. But, getting back to Jess, I wager her statement stems from the stream of unwanted attention, therefore her desire for some peace and quiet is quite understandable. Where things go off the rails is not the general gist of what she said, but the extent and tone in which she took it. She sounds like a prissy Victorian-era Queen of Hearts. Whether she truly meant it that way is an exercise for the doper hoards. ---

For context there is a video of a bit of the interview were the quote came from at this site. They don’t show her saying it. But, you get a real feel for what the interview is like. Johnny Carson used to HATE it when people approached him in public, especially if he was eating, because it happened All. The. Damned. Time. People saw him five times a week, late at night, and so they (subconciously) felt that they were friends with him. THEY knew a lot about HIM, but to Johnny, they were just random strangers who would not let him have a moment’s peace when he was in public. JH is experiencing the same thing, only with her, I imagine that it’s guys who fantasize about her. They see her when she’s next to naked, they wank to her image, they think they’ve got a relationship with her. They don’t. People think that because public figures are, you know, well-known, that means that every member of the public has the right to try to interact with them at any moment. No, it doesn’t. Being smiled at and having someone try to chat you up is flattering…the first few hundred times. After a while it gets very, very old. I speak from experience here, and while I was quite attractive when I was younger, I was never a public figure. Jess is asserting her right to be left alone. EVERY person has the right to be left alone. Sure, it’s nice if a public figure is gracious, especially to a young person, but public figures are NOT obliged to give a smile, or an autograph, or a photo opportunity to random strangers, any more than non-public figures are. Some people seem to think they have a right to public figure’s time and good will. However, even public figures have the same amount of minutes in a day that the rest of us have…and if they’d rather not be bothered by random strangers wanting to spend time with them, that’s their business. It’s like beggars. Every beggar just wants a couple of bucks, but if you give every single one of them a buck or two, there are still beggars with an empty cup…and you’re out of money. Same with famous people. If they spend five minutes with every person who wants that time, then they don’t have any time to themselves. ---
