A word or two on this subject. I’m 28 years old. 3 years ago I had thousands of dollars in my bank account, great credit (for a 25 year old) and was doing pretty good. At the time, I barely spent any money and paid every bill on time. I could not have imagined what would happen in the ensuing years. My addictive personality caught up with me. Clothes, drugs (as I said, addictive personality), terribly uninformed investments, FOREX, loans, etc. The money went so fast that I can hardly believe it. All told, I now owe over $25 grand. To me, this seems like a metric shit-ton (technical term.) Due to various circumstances, I haven’t been paying ANY bills. This, of course, makes things much worse. I no longer have a cell phone (I’ve always had a cell phone) and just received a notice from the IRS. I’m being audited from my last return. I feel as though I’m running out of options. At present, what seems to be my best course of action is going with one of those credit/debt consolidation agencies. Yes, I know they can be shady. Yes, I know they make a profit. And yes, I’m none too thrilled at having gotten myself into this situation. All told, I know how you feel. Maybe not exactly but I have a decent idea. As previous posters have said, you had to do what you had to do. Just as I’ll have to do whatever I decide to do. As an afterthought, if anyone can advise me about the debt/credit consolidation agencies (one LOW monthly payment!!!) such advice would be much appreciated. ---

I advise against them. Essentially, you’re paying someone else to spend your money for you. Those outfits can’t offer any of the protections that come with bankruptcy–even Ch13 bankruptcy if you can’t qualify for a Ch7. ---

**Oakie** , **picunurse** , et al. But under _whose_ law? The federal one? Yeah okay, thanks for making it possible, but under _my_ law, you don’t take something knowing it must be repaid, and then just say “Fuck you!” I _know_ I’m sick, but that doesn’t alleviate the guilt! I know: It’s a personal “dragon” I will have to deal with on my own, but I summoned him, so I’ll deal with him myself. Some of you have written that I should hold my head up high. I am sorry, but I just cannot do that right now. One thing I do know for sure: I couldn’t have any better friends than y’all, and there’s not a day which goes by that I don’t think about you! You incurred this debt intending to pay it off. Unforeseen circumstances arose, and now you’re not able to pay it off. The creditor knew that risk existed when they extended credit, and they factored that risk into the terms of your agreement with them. You aren’t trying to discharge debts for diamond rings, fur coats, and luxury cruises. I expect it’s mostly medical bills, possibly some credit cards–which may have been used to purchase necessities like medicine, food, or shelter–stuff like that. You are not abusing the system. You are not telling your creditors to fuck off. You are exercising a legal right available to all citizens because you’re in a situation where you don’t have many alternatives. ---
