According to the Gospel writer Jesus was stripped of His garments and the soldiers gambled for them. This would mean He was intered with just a loin cloth. When Mary Magdalene came to the tomb the linen cloths and head cover was in the tomb. But she saw him dressed and even though she knew Him very well, she didn’t recognize Him because she thought he was the gardener. I just wondered where he got the clothes. Did he whip up a miricle garment for Himself?

He did seem to take great pains in proving to the Apostles that he was not a spirit. So it brings up a question to me as to why his followers couldn’t bring Him clothes and why a person would ressurect, leave the linens in the grave and take the time to fold up the head cover and put it in a different place?

I don’t believe there is a “factual” answer to this, as it is not addressed in the Gospels.

However, if you want to play “Gotcha Christians!” or believe that bringing up questions about details will invalidate a major world religion, then we can ask a Moderator to move this to Great Debates.

A cite for what exactly? I’m given to understand that the book is somewhat well known in certain circles.

That the soldiers cast lots for his clothes: John 19:23.
That the linen clothes were found in the sepulcher: John 20: 5-7.
That Mary saw Jesus and mistook him for the gardener: John 20:15.

Ha. Atheist here, But I read the book by Dutch atheist author Maarten 't Hart, that is full of the bible’s most juiciest inconsistencies.

The one you bring up is one of them. Maarten tells a story of how his father, who was very religious, and also a provfessional grave digger and cemetery keeper, discussed this very problem with his religious friends. Maartens father offered a solution. Maartens father had a small office in the cemetary, that usually contained a change of clothes if he had dirtied his clothes digging. Maartens father offered that Jesus had emerged from the grave naked and had helped himself to some clothes from the 0 BC equivalent of the keeper’s office. That also explained why those who met Jesus mistook him for a gardener.

Maarten says that while his fathers friends found his explanation ingenious, they preferred the explanation of another brother. That was that there is some form of a Heavenly Storehouse, that provides for all the things that pop up in the bible unexplained.

There would have been no loincloth, incidentally. Christian images give him one for modesty, but in reality, people were crucified butt naked.

It seems to me that if one is willing to believe that an angel rolled back the stone, it’s not that big a leap to believe that the same angel provided clothing as well.

The linen cloths and head covering might have been too closely associated with death.

Technically called “hammerspace,” after the place where Tweety-Bird stores the hammers bigger than he is, which he can just reach behind himself and pull out.

Y’know, it’s crap like this which makes me laugh at Atheists. The blind assumption that simply because we’re not explicitly told something it didn’t happen. I don’t recall it saying that jesus took dumps, either. But wait, I says that he ate! I don’t see anyone eating without taking dumps, so it couldn’t have just passed over it! Inconsistency! I won’t believe unles you can show me Jesus shat!

First off, IIRC, people were not usually interred naked. Simply because he died in the buff doesn’t mean they didn’t put something on before they put him in the tomb. Second, you then go on to complain that Jesus, after rising from the dead and appearing before his desciples after death, didn’t get some clothes from somewhere (hell, anywhere).

Honestly, this doesn’t even rise to level of being “petty.” Epic fail, guys, epic fail.

There is no such assumption.

No, they were wrapped in strips of linen, but Jesus left his strips of linen on the ground.

It’s reasonable to ask where, and it shows a lapse of continuity by the storyteller, but this is far, far, FAR from the greatest problem with these resurrection stories (aside from the fact that they’re impossible, I mean 🆒).

I don’t know, I’d think it more plausible that he got them from Heaven, rather than Hell.

Some writers posit that everyone’s naked in heaven, others that people are naked in Hell. I wanted to be inclusive.

As well as shrouds or robes.

And there is the problem. You have in mind a story from today: like a very long book or movie. Butn these were not made up to entertain and are as inconsist as real life events often are, and as skippy as reporting events over a long period of time always is.

The strips \*were the shrouds, and there were no robes.

They don’t just have discrepencies, at the points where they no longer share a common source (Mark), they diverge into compeletely different stories.

You’ve just found an excellent argument that Jesus should have died much earlier from an explosive rupture of the lower intestine!

Him, and every other character in every story ever! What a discovery!

Any atheist who thinks this is going to shake anybody’s faith has consumed to much sugar, but that aside it _is_ a slightly interesting question to toss around. Only slightly, though, since there’s about eleventy-bajillion other little oddities and inconsistencies in the bible, most of which are far less easily resolved. Most noticeably in this discussion, did gardeners wear burkas or something? How could Mary possibly not recognise the guy?
