i’m probably in the minority (or maybe 1 of 1) but i’ve seen good discussions arise out of trolling. not writing of this board since i don’t visit enough to have a good pulse on the site, but sometimes a troll can shake things up and inspire real discourse. for example, years ago on a parenting site a poster (who became obviously a troll over the course of the thread), by virtue of his increasingly outrageous statements, prompted others to get into actual conversations. such as (paraphrasing)- troll poster: “when my 3 yr old misbehaves i lock him in his room for the rest of the day” poster 2 to troll: “if you knew how to effectively discipline you wouldn’t need to put him in a room at all” poster 3 to troll: “an entire day is excessive. half an hour is enough” poster 2 to poster 3: "a 3 yr old should never be timed out in a room by themselves " poster 3 to poster 2: “you can’t make a blanket statement like that, we do room timeouts because …” Conversation between posters 2 & 3 becomes heated as they cite studies, articles and personal anecdotes not to mention life philosophies. And these are two posters who normally are pretty copacetic on life views and are generally pretty careful about the picture they present to the world as far as rationality & politeness. you could say the troll’s lies led to some truths. i realize that the subject matter itself is of limited appeal (was a lot more interesting when i was living the parenting suituations) but the process the troll, even inadvertently uses, can provide good discourse. of course not all trolls, not all threads, not all boards. and no, i’ve never trolled. ---

I have been posting here for over twelve years. In that time, I think I’ve gone after exactly [one troll.](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=211820) I did that because it was a troll in a subject area I knew intimately; for this reason I was absolutely convinced I was right. The comparatively flimsy – non-existent – evidence here absolutely baffles me. Based on someone else’s cruel One Hit Wonder, how can anyone conclude anything about a third party post? ---
