The standards for “the real messiah” are so high that I don’t think god himself would be able to pass the test. Whatever else Christianity may have done, it spread aspects of Judaism–notably monotheism and the Old Testament–far wider than they likely would have spread otherwise. The Ten Commandments, the story of the Exodus, the names and tales of the Old Testament prophets, are known to every literate person in the Western world. Do Jews have much of a feeling about this, whether good bad or indifferent? ---

Many of those ideas had been altered or misunderstood, or used against us, so it’s hard to feel great about Christianity being our spokesperson. Even using the term “Old Testament” is problematic. It’s not old to us. ---
