IIRC, Deuteronomy et al has a lot of material regarding how slaves are to be treated: did Jewish slavemasters follow those rules? Did they circumcise their slaves, as Jewish law requires? Christian slavemasters attempted to Christianize their slaves, did Jews attempt to convert theirs to Judaism? I think about this every year around Passover. I bet at least some Jews had seders cooked and served by slaves. I wonder if they saw the hypocrisy in having slaves while celebrating their own release from slavery. I also wonder if that’s a strictly 20th/21st century perspective, and they would have seen no hypocrisy whatsoever in it. ---

I don’t remember when it was written, but do remember it was based on a real incident. There was a children’s book called A Yankee at Seder in which a Southern Jewish family welcomed a Jewish soldier of the Union Army into their home for the holidays. Unfortunately, I can’t remember many more details than the title. ---

It sounds like a fascinating book, and according to the descriptions does include a discussion of freedom in the context of Southern slavery. Apparently the book includes reference material about the true story. ---
