Since the OP seems so willing to divulge the deep dark secrets of his/her industry, I have a question. Actually, make that two questions. Keep in mind, I’m not asking if you have ever done this or know someone who has, I’m merely wondering if its feasibly possible:
#1: Last month, I got a telemarketing call from a home improvement service, asking if I needed any work done. At the time, I was actually trying to find a good handyman in my area and was running into brick walls, so initially I thought he had been referred to me by someone. But once it turned out he was a telemarketer (I asked how he got my number, he answered “from the System”) I let him have it with both barrels, yelling at him about how I was on the DNCL so what he was doing was illegal, how he doesn’t care about the shame his children must feel about their daddy’s line of work, etc. etc. It was pretty cathartic.
Not long after that, my phone started ringing off the hook ALL DAY LONG with telemarketing calls from everywhere, from 8 a.m. until late at night, not only on my landline but on my cell phone as well (which AFAIK is completely illegal whether you’re on the DNCL or not) and my email box exploded from 10 to 150 spam mails per day, everything from the Veterans of America to the Church of Scientology.
Only in the past week or so have these incessant calls begun to taper off.
So my question is – is it possible for this guy to have done something, as revenge, to send out my personal info to as many cold-callers as possible? Or is it most likely coincidence?
#2: Until the recent spam-gate, about 90% of the calls I normally get actually ask for my brother, who owns the apartment but does not live here. I’m the only resident, the phone’s in my name only, and as far I know (though I could be wrong) there’s never been any documentation that would link his name with my number. Where could these calls be coming from?
