This is not a rant _against_ Jimmy Kimmel, this is a rant _for_ Jimmy Kimmel, in the spirit of [my stupid sportswriters thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=440562). In response to being banned from Monday Night Football, Kimmel calmly claimed the following in [this story](http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/richard_deitsch/10/17/kimmel/index.html):

**“As far as sports journalism on television goes, there are so many parties attached to so many other parties that everything you say has major ramifications. When I was at Fox it was the same way. You can’t make fun of Jerry Jones because he’s the head of the committee that decides which network gets the NFL. There are sacred cows and that’s just not honest broadcasting. There really isn’t a place for honesty. … God forbid, you say something that is not part of the script. It might be the most politically correct of all arenas.”**

I knew sports reporters and sports networks were a craven lot. Hear, hear Jimmy. Now will you restart The Man Show, please?

I wish they’d stop doing the guests in the booth altogether. It’s extremely annoying to listen to the announcers ignore the game while they interview some b-list celeb about his latest crappy movie or television show.

Word on that! Especially when the guest doesn’t know shit about whatever game they are at, and they ask their opinion.

“So, guest dipshit, what did you think about the decision to pass on third and two?”

“Well, that was good, and BTW my new movie has a thing like that, and…”

Screw that shit.

What I don’t get is who exactly did ESPN think they were getting?

Here’s a man who is dating Sarah Silverman (or did date her or is married to her) who may very well be the least politically correct person on the planet and a man who was responsible for a show that ended with woman jumping on trampolines. What exactly did they expect?

It’s like having Paris Hilton as a guest and then getting all shocked when she blows Kornheiser.

So Kimmel thinks its wrong that ESPN doesn’t want him saying something stupid, whatever he said, that could potentially cost them a billion dollar contract? His arguing Jerry Jones or whoever should have a sense of humor is not the point, if he doesn’t, he doesn’t, ESPN has a right to protect their assets. And the guest in the booth is another one of those dumb ploys to get non fans watching- I can’t imagine a Kimmel loving football hater watching a four hour game just for Kimmel’s five minutes of banter, especially when they don’t pre-announce the guest anyway.

</div>

The irony is that Kimmel in the booth had me turn the sound way down. As long as they were basically going to ignore the game, I was better off watching the game without sound.

This is not saying I disagree with anything Jimmy said in the Op’s quote. I give him a Hear, Hear too. Just keep him and every other celebrity out of the booth you stupid fucking suits at ESPN.

</div>

Well maybe none of this would be an issue if ESPN was able to field a booth of analysts that weren’t total chemistry-less d-bags in the first place. Mike Tirico is as about as bland and boring as a grade school teacher, Jaws just seems pleased to be there and babbles like a moron, and Kornheiser The Human Scrotum is a whiney gnarled prick who it seems the other two walk on eggshells around.

Here’s a good quote from the guy who “banned” Jimmy:

> [@](#):
>
> “It was cheap,” Rothman told Richard Sandomir of The New York Times. “The more he went on, the worse he got.”

After reading the article I’d have to agree. Well, if, by “worse”, he meant “better”, of course.

I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, with such a blah broadcasting crew, you’d think they’d be happy to have Jimmy liven it up a little. But on the other hand, I really hate the growing trend to invite in guests during a game and have them blab on about something totally unrelated to the game while I’m trying to watch the damned game!

On the third hand, I tend to not watch MNF anyway, unless it’s a big Cowboys game, since I’m not a big fan of night time football.

> Kimmel took multiple swipes at the not-so-smooth departure of Theismann from the broadcast (“I’d also like to welcome Joe Theismann, watching from his living room with steam coming from his ears”) and zinged sacred cows Tom Brady (“What impressed me most is that he could impregnate two models”), Kelly Ripa (“Listen if we can have a Mormon President, I can marry Kelly”) and sports betting (“Are you allowed to bet legally on this game?”).

Tom Brady _has_ impregnated two models and I seriously doubt that Kelly Ripa’s minions are going to put down their Oprah’s Book Club selections to pick up torches and pitch forks. As to Theisman, Kimmel was _praised_ last year for the line “how’s the leg, Joe?”, which is a lot worse than what he said on Monday.

**Wee Bairn** , just try to have _some_ clue what you’re talking about, next time. You’re making too much of a habit of uninformed posting.

Nitpick - Tom Brady has only impregnated one model. Gisele Bündchen is not pregnant. I see no problem with anything Jimmy said - I guess the ESPN people haven’t learned that you really should listen to a comic before you book him.

Funny, I never got the slightest impression _The Man Show_ was un-PC, in that all it did was reinforce the common and apparently comforting stereotype that men were lusty, incompetent idiots. Women in bikinis, big deal. Women in slave costumes… _that_ woulda been gutsy.

Yes, it’s even older than that, but if you’re going to credit someone, it ought to be the one with the best bassline and backing vocals.

True, but she’s denied them, and if she was 2 months pregnant back in March, she’d be delivering some time about now. Given that googling “Gisele pregnant” leads to 7 month old rumors, and “Gisele baby” leads to the sordid tale of the gift basket Gisele sent to Bridget in September, you can be pretty sure Gisele was not pregnant back in March.

I thought the excerpt in the OP _was_ quoted from the linked article. Just like CBS can fire Don Imus for potentially costing them money with his comments, ESPN and/or Fox can keep Kimmell off for fear his comments would endanger either the contract, advertisers, whatever.

I may in fact be getting dumber each day, but I don’t see proof from that post.
