I have a job interview tomorrow morning. I’m nowhere near excited about the actual work (boy, that expensive degree has sure helped me get…this interview for a position as a cashier at a grocery store!), but I am in desperate need of a paycheck.

I know the general rule of thumb is to dress a bit nicer than that type of position generally requires. So, for a job as a grocery store cashier, dress slacks and a nice blouse should be okay, right? I don’t want to _overdress_ (it’s a part-time, 15 cents above minimum wage position), but obviously, I certainly don’t want to underdress. Basically - does the black slacks, nice button-down shirt\*, and sensible dress shoes sound appropriate? I could go with khakis or a skirt with tights instead, but I don’t really have any “nice” shoes that I can wear with khakis, and I loathe wearing skirts (and also have a shoe problem there). Thoughts?

(Why yes, I am a bit nervous about my first promising job interview in three and a half months of unemployment, how could you tell?)

\*Uh, if you’re into details, either a light-blue long-sleeve shirt, or a white-with-black-teeny-tiny-dots shirt and a black cardigan sweater.

That sounds fine. FWIW, I’ve gotten hired for salaried office jobs dressed like that.

Good luck!

I think that sounds like a reasonable outfit.

Totally appropriate. Good luck!

Yeah, for a position like that, wear something that’s commensurate with what the manager wears (shirt/tie/khakis for guys).

Great - thanks. Just needed a little reassurance.

Good luck with your interview! I have one tomorrow for a receptionist position. Yeah, my big fancy degree has surely helped me, too. 😛

I’d wear the black cardigan, white shirt combo with the pants, but that’s me.

Good luck!

Formality wise, I’d say it works. I assume you can handle the fashion part, as, otherwise, I’d need pics.
