A 7 here. It’s been higher in recent years, but lately the work’s been piling on at a furious pace. Since last July, I’ve been letting the folks up the ladder know that I’d need help in meeting deadlines, but no help’s been coming. Thank goodness one project just got postponed on account of the sequester; I think I’ll be able to catch up on the rest now. They’re also putting us through an organizational reorganization that’s been a real mess.
I really like the underlying job, so it takes a lot of crap to drag the overall experience down to a 7. There’s a lot of crap.
Poll summary stats, so far:
Mean = 6.56
Median = 7
Mode = 7
Job is a 9. Great colleagues, boss is quite knowledgeable in the field so she understands the variables that go into a decision, and the money / benefits are very good.
Location can be a bit of a challenge for families but HR does a good job of telling it straight to prospective employees and families.
I know I shouldn’t complain because there are lots of people who would love to have my job but…
I’m constantly surprized at how a large profitable company can be so inefficient and poorly managed. We spend more than half our effort dealing with problems we create for ourselves while preaching the benefits of continuous improvement. We are specialists at identifying problems and creating lists of things to fix. Unfortunately, things are rarely removed from the lists because no one is empowered to act on anything. The management can’t make a decision so we continue to review status reports that are filled with reasons why projects are stalled.
Are there any large companies that don’t fall into the trap of inaction and over-analysing what brand of paper towel should be used in the bathroom?
I voted 9. Pay is excellent, benefits are good, and I get tons of paid time off (vacation, holidays, etc.). I like my co-workers pretty well, but some of them have infuriating personal habits and we’re crowded too close together.
I’m not sure a 10 is possible for something one is obligated to do. I can only imagine retirement as a 10 score.
I voted 4, which means today is a pretty average day. I like most of the people I work with, but several of my closest work-friends have left the company over the past year and a half, which has made it a bit harder to get through the day. My company is a pretty standard large firm, which is to say there’s a lot of things I don’t love about the way they do business, but they’re not getting in my way on a daily basis, and overall I’m pretty neutral towards them. Mostly, though, I’m just not thrilled with what I’m doing right now. A couple of years back I agreed to move to a department that has higher status/responsibility/pay level to fill a need for the firm, and I’ve found that I just don’t like it as much as what I used to do.
Anyways, I’m going back to school full time in the fall, so there’s not too much to do but keep sucking it up and getting the paychecks for the next few months. That’s not exactly the worst situation ever.
Good job with great people and a decent salary. But the benefits aren’t great (small company so no leverage for insurance), it’s an hour from the house (not a bad drive but gas money and wear) and like everyone else, I could always get paid more.
