Joe Biden? Really?

Well how much do you figure? How much do you think Cheney made?

Eta: actually there’s a perfectly good Hillary thread going if you’d rather answer over there.

He’s acceptable to most Democrats, would have Obama vigorously campaigning for him (which would likely ensure high turnout by minorities), and (if he won the nomination) would be running against whatever candidate survives the Republican nominating process… so were he to win the nomination, he’d have a good chance to win the presidency.

I doubt he would win the nomination if he ran, but I have no problem with him and would happily support his candidacy if he won the nomination.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I prefer him to the others, but I will support whoever is nominated.

I highly doubt he’s running and I think most of the talk is simply pundits writing stories to help fill in the gap of the late summer silly season. Sitting Vice Presidents don’t just jump into a race. Everyone in DC and the media knew that George H.W. Bush was running after Reagan’s 2nd term and that Gore was running after Bill Clinton’s second term. Cheney never even entertained the thought of running.

I sure he’s made some provisional plans to enter the race in case something happens to Clinton, something serious, not just more email or Benghazi noise. I imagine such plans are being made at the request of the party. Sorry, Bernie Bots, he’s not getting the nomination.

I can’t think of anyone worse for president…oh wait, yes I can. Hillary

I don’t get this statement. Presumably, “Bernie Bots” are those who want to see Sanders win. Why should they get an apology that somebody other than Sanders is not going to win?

Biden has an impressive resume on paper with his time in the Senate, his mark on multiple pieces of legislation and a history of working to get stuff passed. All the big budget compromises from the never-ended stream of stalemates had Biden’s involvement. He chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is considered very well versed in foreign affairs. Given the military career of his son it would be hard to hit him on “hates the military” bullshit.

Stockpile of wacky quotes aside, Biden also has authenticity. He has genuine warmness. People like him. If he says something, he might make it quotable but he won’t make it sound fake or insincere. While I don’t see Obama getting overly involved in the primary process, Biden would of course have the full backing of the nation’s first black president in the general which is worth a lot more than having said “clean and articulate” nine years ago.

The Delaware thing seems meaningless. No one dreams of moving to Ohio or Wisconsin either. Who cares? Clinton was connected with Arkansas. Who the hell cares about Arkansas?

I’m not saying he’ll run or he’ll beat Clinton or whatever. I do think that if he can find a balance between his genuine personality and his resume to make people think “He might not always speak slick but he’s smart and means what he says” he could be formidable. His first campaign was scuttled by a stupid plagiarism scandal (stupid being the plagiarism) and in his second he was immediately overshadowed as a senator from a small state by Clinton & Obama but now with eight years of vice presidency, people know him.

I’m actually not sure that he is. I have read and heard nothing about him since his abortive 1988 campaign to convince me that he is smart. He’s not Quayle-level dumb, I suppose, but smart? Hmmm.

“Sorry” is short for “I’m sorry if this bruises your feelings, but I think I have to say it and I’m going to say it anyway”. It’s basic social interaction stuff.

I think his legislative career and accomplishments show someone far sharper than some zany quotes reflect. He and Obama have become close friends and Obama is said to make regular use of Biden’s counsel.

As I conceded in post 20. Just not sure I’d call him “smart.” He can have good staff and get stuff done and not actually be terribly bright.

Del-A-ware.

My own take on reading about his career and accomplishments is that he’s a sharp guy, if not especially silver-tongued. I don’t think you get through the hearings and forge the compromises he has just by having competent staff. Obviously he’s not 100% intellectually infallible and I’m sure there’s things from his long career where I could say “that was dumb” but my impression is that he’s intelligent. Your mileage may vary – I’m not looking to take on the mantle of Biden Booster for the thread. I did think that the OP was missing a bit though and the idea of a Biden presidency doesn’t seem off the wall to me.

As mentioned up thread Joe has an authenticity about him that really can’t be matched by any other candidate. Personal tragedies notwithstanding, Joe has been a competent Senator and Obama never loses an opportunity to demonstrate a genuine affection for him as a mentor and a friend. This plays huge with the minority vote and it could make a difference. The Maureen Dowd piece a couple of weeks back was definitely someone from the Biden camp testing the waters because how else would Dowd get that kind of intimate family information? I think if Hillary’s email scandal continues to gain traction then we might see a Biden hat in the ring. If Hillary can put the thing to bed then I don’t see Joe in this late. JIMHO

He’s no rocket surgeon, but he seems to maintain a level of competence. He’s got more digits in his IQ than Bush did. Maybe his lack of perceived intelligence would get him some crossover votes in the weird situation where he becomes the Democratic nominee.

Yes, I understand that part. Did you read the post you were replying to?

It’s pretty much the opposite. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a sentence that started with “Sorry, [pejorative epithet for group of people]” where the “sorry” was even remotely genuine.

I should have phrased it better. There’s no scenario imaginable where Clinton and Biden slug it out and divide the party enough to allow Bernie to charge through on his white horse (fed only on organic oats) and wins the nomination.

I don’t think anyone has ever expected that to happen. If Sanders wins, it’ll be on his own merits.

Of course. It’s silly to pretend a guy like that is dumb. OP’s biggest complaints were a few minor gaffes and the state of Delaware – I’d take that as a ringing endorsement from someone like our “Champion.”

My biggest problem with Biden is the same I have with Clinton and Sanders – age. Wouldn’t we be better off with a young person my age, someone like Elizabeth Warren?
