I thought the best parts of CRY BABY were the whitetrash family and the jailhouse singalong. I remember seeing it when it came out and being amazed at how tame it was for John Waters. ---

Saw Depp on “Inside the Actor’s Studio” and the host said that he had invited a lot of “big name” actors to the program, and by far the largest turnout was for Depp. So apparently a lot of people think he’s the bomb. Personally, he kind of gives me the creeps. Like he’s right on the edge of turning into a full-fledged nut. ---

Just tossing in my two cents that Depp is sooo great. About a week after seeing **Pirates** , I was at a party and quite drunk, and telling someone that I’d just seen the movie. I described Depp as being hot, and then said “well I don’t really like to use the word hot…he was _delicious!_” I was given well-deserved mockery the next day. 🙂 ---

I realized the other day that I have had a crush on Johnny Depp for over half of my life. So no, I’m not mocking him. I’d never mock my Johnny! ---

_Benny and Joon_ was on HBO yesterday and I happened to catch about 5 minutes of it. In this scene Jonny’s character is in a diner and spikes two sub rolls with two forks making two little legs(forks) and feet(sub rolls). He starts doing this Charlie Chaplin style dance with these “legs” that is hiliarous. The look on his face is priceless. This scene could not have been pulled off by 99% of the actors in Hollywood. ---

You should see the rest of Benny and Joon just for the physical schtick he does with Aidan Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson in the park scene. He is absolutely as good as Keaton, Chaplin, or Lloyd and he learned the act in just a few weeks. The boy’s a chameleon. As a former social worker for the mentally ill, I loved the fact that they didn’t take the easy out with B&J. Mary Stuart Masterson didn’t “just need love” to make her well. (Unfortunately I can’t think of that movie without instantly recalling every last annoying beat of that “500 Miles” song by the Proclaimers.) ---

My friend and I used to gather for 21 Jumpstreet viewing parties. From Salon: “Johnny Depp is nothing if not versatile. He’s played a guy with scissors for hands, a flaming director and a pirate. Now it seems he’ll be offered the classic role of Willy Wonka in a film based on “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” directed by Tim Burton. Too bad author Roald Dahl isn’t around to see this one, since he didn’t like the 1971 version and this one’s bound to be good.” Word out on **Once Upon a Time in Mexico** is that Johnny steals the show. And it’s nice to see that he hasn’t told people to call him “John” so that he’d be taken seriously. ---

Okay, I really like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” and if you have to remake it, Tim Burton’s the one to do it. But casting Johnny Depp is going to throw in a whole new element that I’m not entirely comfortable with. ---

Juniper200 - What did you mean by “But casting Johnny Depp is going to throw in a whole new element that I’m not entirely comfortable with.” - regarding Willy Wonka, obviously? Now, I loved Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. As much as I’ve become a Johnny Depp fan over the last month, I wonder what new wrinkle he could bring to the character. Considering his track record, I’m willing to see what he’d come up with, but I’d rather see him in something new, or in that Don Quixote movie. I sure wish that could get made. I hope KidCharlemagne who posted above does watch all of Benny & Joon. Depp was certainly magically delicious in that one. ---

_Slight hijack due to the fact that there is no Depp appreciation thread_ Johnny Depp has never done it for me. Ever. My tastes run towards the “tall, thin and tortured” types. (Jeremy Irons is a shining example) However, after seeing him tonight in **Pirates of the Carribean** , that attitude has changed. As grimy and squirrely as Capt. Jack Sparrow is, the idea of being stranded on a desert island with him and an unlimited supply of rum is now a fantasy. One that my vocabulary cannot do justice to except for two words… Yes, please. ---

Not being intimately familiar with Mr. Depp’s entire _Ouvre_, I can hardly present myself as a true **Deppophile**. Having said that, I’ll offer this observation. There are some actors and actresses out there who are able to pull an eyeline of such subtle humor and self-awareness that when you’re watching them, this is what is going through your head. To me he frequently presents as a more whimsical sort of Nic Cage.
