**Henry** , I don’t think it goes much further than the idea of a public spectacle being cancelled due to forces beyond the organizers’ control. The joke is rooted in the antedeluvian age when ballgames were commonly “Cancelled on account of rain.” MLB seems to have expunged all references to the custom from the fossil record, at the behest of their shareholders. 😃 Not exactly side-splitting. ---
