Yeah, I know what DNA is for, etc. I was just wondering whether it was having a go at the politically correct system that now lets ‘killers’ off the loose by bringing up DNA testing, or whether it’s having a go at the old way when innocent people were executed.

Henry, I don’t think it goes much further than the idea of a public spectacle being cancelled due to forces beyond the organizers’ control.
The joke is rooted in the antedeluvian age when ballgames were commonly “Cancelled on account of rain.” MLB seems to have expunged all references to the custom from the fossil record, at the behest of their shareholders.

Change the word cancelled to postponed and you’ll have it. Games were only cancelled if they had no bearing on the standings (end of season, team pretty much out of it, that kind of thing).
