A few months ago I was on a trip with my band. We were heading out of state and upon arrival in the town where we were playing, I saw it. “OMG, did you see that ?” “See what ?”. This was worth turning around, trailer and all. At an intersection there was a cluster of campaign signs. The county sheriffs’ election was on. One sign said: Elect Mike Hunt, County Sheriff We had alot of fun at Mikes’ expense. “Mike Hunt is for the community” I even considered taking one of the signs to hang in the studio so I could be looking at it this very moment but of course that would be stealing so of course I didn’t. So is this bad ? Should I not think this is funny ? I know it is the guys name and I don’t even know him at all but it is funny as hell to me. Anyone else laughing ? ---

I wouldn’t ever say it to his face if you want to live, but other than that, go ahead. The big problem is when you make jokes about someone’s name to the person. Even if they don’t take offence, they have heard the joke 2,184,572,964 times already. Trust me. ---

If I had a humorous name like that, I think I’d be okay with total strangers making fun of it. As long as they weren’t rude to me about it to my face, it’d be okay. ---

Hank, are you kidding? The sign actually said “Elect Mike Hunt…”? The joke about that name has been around for many years. I’m sorry but it sounds very hard to believe. Why didn’t he have “Elect Michael Hunt…” - even that sounds a little better. ---

We had county sheriff named Dick Erhardt. When he was running for election we suggested he use campaign slogans like “Up with Dick” and “If you don’t vote for Erhardt, You won’t get Dick”. And when re-election time comes around “Dick Erhardt, Again”. ---

Well, I can see where having a memorable name would come in handy when one was running for office. On the other hand, I can speak from personal experience that sometimes it just ain’t that funny. Knew a guy named Kirk once, you see. Growing up during the seventies, he repeatedly got the same joke, to his face, about six hundred thousand times: “Hey, Captain Kirk, Where’s Mr. Spock?” He got pretty sour on that. In particular, I remember one time where, upon meeting someone for the very first time, the guy made that exact same joke. Kirk’s response was, “That joke was funny the first forty times I heard it, back in 1968. Don’t you think it makes a pretty bad first impression when the first thing you do upon meeting someone is to make fun of his name?” Kirk hadn’t been particularly harsh, but it was plain he meant what he said. The other fellow’s response was to get defensive, and remark, “Hey, it was only a joke, no need to get snotty about it.” Kirk’s response: “You’re absolutely right. Let’s not get snotty about it. Let’s all have a big laugh at my stupid fucking name, instead. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,” he said, completely deadpan. “Do you feel better now?” Come to think of it, by the early eighties, sometimes Kirk made a pretty bad first impression, himself, if you set him off with a Star Trek joke. Ran across him again, during the late nineties. We talked, and he remarked that no one ever made jokes about his name these days. Today’s generation was more into the Next Generation, apparently… ---
