That was just a screen projecting a picture.

> An enjoyable movie, in the grand tradition of Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Now perhaps Mr Whedon could offer us something that unsettles, disturbs, unnerves, instils fear - in short, a horror film.

Yeah, I guess that’s why it was somewhat unsatisfying for me. I went in expecting horror, and never really got it.

I have to admit I was little disappointed in the Ballerina. As she turned around to reveal her face, I was like, “This is going to be good!” and it revealed…

a lamprey! I was expecting something awesome and horrific. Maybe like she has no face all and she steals the faces of others…through dance.

If that was a screen projecting a picture then they might notice the other side showing no parallax as they drove towards the tunnel. If it was a projection then it was still magical technology to project a different pictures to every possible viewpoint.

I am not reading most of the comments since I haven’t seen the film. I was invited to see it tonight, and I’m on the fence. Is it more atmospheric horror, or does it involve torture? Gore I don’t mind, but I can’t watch torture.

It’s a satire and commentary on horror more than horror itself. There’s lots of blood but no gore or torture.

Just a screen was a simplistic explanation, it was “make something invisible by projecting what is on the other side on a screen” technology that does exist [now](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKPVQal851U).

Which works fine if the observer never moves and is in a straight line from the observer to the projection to the projector.

But it is a small thing that doesn’t detract from the movie really. It just doesn’t really fit.

Thought it was a lot of fun. Don’t want to over analyze it since that seems to suck all the fun out of it.
Only one additional thing I thought I’d see and was disappointed when I didn’t:

I thought for sure Sigourney Weaver’s character would die at the hands of an alien. At least something sucking to her face or bursting through her chest. Some kind of Alien reference would have been nice.

Nust saw it an hour ago and I loved it. Classic Whedon. Great dialogue, some cheesy CGI, AWESOME!

I disagree with the ending too:

I though The Director and the One-Armed Buckner girl would suffice the old gods as to the virgin and the fool.

Did we even get to see……the “Alien Beast” from the whiteboard? What it a monster or just a killer Grey?

First off - saw this last night with some of the Toronto Browncoats - loved it!

If it was some kind of physical barrier with a screen - it would still have been a remarkable achievement to build it that far down into the canyon. IIRC when the RV is driving into the tunnel at the start of the movie, we see a bird smack into the barrier from the outside, foreshadowing the difficulty getting out - so it would have to be a double-sided screen.

Why do you think that?

When the bird flys into it at the beginning, the bird is basically disintegrated and the barrier shows a glowing green hexagonal pattern. When the motorcycle hits it, it stops suddenly, with no indication that the barrier has been even scratched, and the motorcycle scrapes along it as it falls, emitting showers of sparks.

That all says “forcefield” to me.

I’m totally annoyed by everyone referring to Marty and Dana as The Fool and The Virgin in this thread. Part of the movie’s theme is that they don’t fit those stereotypes, but were forced into them by the organization. They’re sacrificial offerings who rebelled against their sacrifice – the whole movie would’ve deflated if they’d gone along with what was planned for them and killed each other.

I can see how the ending bothers people, but in all honesty, I can’t imagine killing my friend just so the cycle can begin again, slaughtering innocent people for eons just to buy off some hideous gods. Y’know what, let the damn world end. Maybe something better will arise from the primordial ooze.

However, I would’ve thought it was amusing if the Ancient Ones emerged from their god-pits, left the Earth in ruins, and then flew off to do their own thing in outer space, and the last shot was Marty and Dana – now both werewolves – crawling from the wreckage of the Cabin.

Why does a force field not make sense?

This a corporation that’s able to create and control numerous monsters and drugs which they can use to rather dramatically alter people’s behavior, I.E. turn Jules into a cartoonish slut and Chris Hemsworth character from an intellectual on a full academic scholarship into a cartoonish alpha male jerk.

I don’t see why a force field is more absurd than this
CH: Ok, we need to go room to room locking down each one and we must stay together.

CH: Ok, let’s split up.
