I have two separate jpeg images. I would like them side-by-side, but in one jpeg image. Is this possible without high end/specialized software? ---

You will need some kind of simple image editor that will let you open one image, expand the “canvas” or “image area”, then open, select and paste in the second one where you want it (in the new, empty space). I think Windows Paint can do this. If not, there are a couple of freeware tools that will. If there are tools that will simply stitch two images together, I am not aware of them. ETA: I got as far as opening a file in Paint and extending the canvas, but it’s a one-file program. Try opening the second image, using Ctrl-C to copy it, then open the first image and extend the canvas. Ctrl-P should let you paste the first image where you want it. No garn’tees. ---

GIMP is free. Create a new image in the desired size, copy and paste each of the old. ---

Yeah, I see no reason why you couldn’t do this in paint. Open the first image in Paint and zoom out until you have a good amount of area to work with. Grab the side of the image and pull it to the side until it’s doubled. Open the second image in another instance of paint. Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C and go back to your first image. Ctrl+V and then just move it with your mouse until it’s lined up properly. ---

Older versions of paint didn’t have “zoom out.” It’s a VERY nice feature, for exactly what the OP wants. I’m glad they got wise and added it. ---

I can think of two ways to do this. 1. a simple cheap piece of specialized software. Back when Win95 was state-of-the-art, I bought a scanner second-hand that came with some software called “ImagePals”, and one of the imagepals programs did exactly that. It was called “Merge”, IIRC, and you could stick images together sideways or vertically. I used it a lot. 2. I have done it successfully with MSPaint. Open the images and find out how many pixels wide and high they are. Create a blank Paint document that is larger than the two of them side-by-side would be. Open each image separately with Paint, copy it to the clipboard, then paste it into the blank image. Move the second image until it is next to the first, then crop the result. A bit tedious and crude, but it’s free (if you’re running Windows, anyway). ---

In case you need another solution, I’ve done it easily with [Irfanview](http://www.irfanview.com/), a basic and free photo editing program that loads literally in about a second on my slow computer. When you open it, click Image on the menu, then Create Panoramic Image. It’s probably a good idea to make the single images you have at least close to the same size.
