Just to add, in case anyone’s in any doubt, that the reasoning behind this and similar rulings in other Islamic countries is so far removed from my personal code of morals and ethics that I cannot even for a nanosecond comprehend why anyone who wasn’t plumb batshit insane would even contemplate considering it, let alone enforcing such a thing - though I think in retribution the judge should be forced to marry the rapist purely for ironic satisfaction. But that’s just me. ---

Which is why we _don’t_ use Ancient (or Medieval) Near Eastern religions as the basis for our laws. ---

FWIW, in my Politics of the Middle East senior level college course (taken for my Political Science degree), we talked equally about the actual, geographical Middle East and north Africa. So, while it’s not “THE Middle East,” it’s certainly fair enough to lump them together— and academic institutions sometimes do. ---

Just curious – is there a Deuteronomy verse that says that when people in town hear a scream for help, everyone who hears it has to drop whatever they’re doing and come to the rescue? 'Cos if not, that’s kind of a big oversight, yeah? ---
