But eventually you will be dead, too. If you were really smart, you would wish for immortality along with the millions and bjs and overwarm baby chickens.

I really have to pay more attention when reading. I spent about 10 seconds in amazement that “humped” was a Biblical phrase. Then I read it again.

Yes because such laws are enforced in liberal societies right?

Barbaric and backwards.

As far as I know, even orthodox Jews do not condone this kind of rape.

What is the point of North African practices of today (presumably based on Islam) with Judaism from 3000 years ago?

If the point is that North Africans may grow up, I would say it’s probably correct.

If the point is that Islam (ETA: at least as apparently practiced in Tangier) and Judaism are morally equivalent, I would have to disagree.

I think the point is that how a religion is written down has little to do with how it is actually practiced.

Why do you think that? After all, the original article and post contain no quotes from any religious texts and no references to any religious texts. Unless I missed something.

I wouldn’t be too sure about that. Some certainly have no problem throwing acid in the faces of teenage girls and Israel’s former Chief Sepphardic Rabbi claimed that God hit New Orleans with a hurricane because “negroes” don’t “do Torah study”.

I find this response hysterically funny because I don’t even remember whatever debate I humiliated you in which caused you to get your panties in a twist.

You clearly think a lot more about me than the reverse.

Anyway, the point is that people living in 3rd World countries do odious things, often using religion as an excuse.

To give one obvious example, female genital mutilation is doneby both Christians and Muslims in Egypt and fundamentalist Jews, as I’ve pointed out have their own extremists.

Maybe you’re not clear on what the Bible means to believers. It is not just a collection of anecdotes about an ancient tribe. In particular, the verse about a rapist marrying his victim is not an anecdote; it is a commandment from the omniscient God of the Universe. Jesus said that until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota of the Law of Moses should be disregarded.

So the question is not what Abrahamic religion has to do with modern times; the question is why doesn’t everyone who professes to believe in the divine inspiration of said commandments, including Christians in the US, not adhere to them, instead of picking and choosing which verses to accept?

How do devout Christians differ from atheists, if each accepts only those aspects of Biblical morality that seem right to them?

And if you want to quibble about the interpretation of the 50-shekel verse, then expand the question to commandments that are more clear, such as the death penalty for homosexual acts, or for a woman who is not able to prove her virginity on her wedding day.

I think it’s you who are not clear. Although there are surely a few exceptions out there, the consensus among Jews – even Orthodox Jews – is NOT that a rapist can get off the hook by agreeing to marry his victim.

Now, you may believe that it’s unreasonable for orthodox Jews to have such a set of beliefs. You may think that their beliefs are not true to the texts of their religion. But that’s what they believe in, at least as far as I know.

Here’s a challenge for you: Find an opinion from or a report on an Israeli court in the last 50 years indicating that a rapist can get off the hook by paying a fine and marrying his victim. Heck, find one from a Bet Din.

I already acknowledged that modern Jews don’t follow that law, and others. I’ve even extended the discussion to modern Christians. My question is, why not? Is the Bible the source of absolute morality, or not? Is the God of the Universe who gave us this everlasting covenant, and his Son who heartily endorsed it, omniscient, or do we know better?

That’s an interesting question, but it’s not relevant to the question I asked.

There are two possibilities here: First, the rabbis have interpreted the holy texts of Judaism correctly; Judaism does not condone letting rapists off the hook; and you have simply misinterpreted Deuteronomy. The second possibility is that you have interpreted the texts of Judaism correctly and the rabbis are (dishonestly) interpreting the texts to conform them to more modern views of morality. That Judaism has evolved.

In the first case, one can ask what the point is in comparing the Islam of today (as apparently practiced in Tangier) with a version of Judaism that never existed. In the second case, one can ask what the point is in comparing the Islam (as apparently practiced in Tangier) of today with the Judaism of 3000 years ago.

So I was just wasting my time when I anticipated this response, and brought in the other commandments about homosexuals and virginity.

Pretty much. I understand your point: You are saying that modern Jewish belief is not true to the Hebrew Bible. And that modern Christian belief is not true to the Christian Bible.

And I am saying “So what? The point of this thread is to criticize beliefs and practices occurring in North Africa right now in the 21st century which are having real, negative effects on (apparently) innocent people. What difference does it make if Judaism or Christianity had similar beliefs or practices a long time ago? What difference does it make if Jewish or Christian clergy have been intellectually dishonest in getting away from these beliefs and practices?”

IMO it’s something that people should think about, given that we have a potential Republican presidential nominee who wants to base US law on Biblical law.

People like you really crack me up. Fundy Christians are teh evil, because they take the bible literally, and it’s wrong. Christians who aren’t Fundy Literalists on the the other hand are teh evil, because they don’t take the bible literally, even though it’s wrong. Do you know how stupid that attitude makes you look?

Can you please provide a few quotes from this person which led you to this conclusion? I have a hard time believing that a mainstream politician would favor conforming American law to everything contemplated in the Bible. Does this individual want to bring back slavery?

[Here’s](http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_ded&v=OLJYN1mxmKg) Santorum saying civil law has to conform to God’s law. I’m not a mind reader, so you’ll have to ask him about specifics.

I made no mention of evil, but if it makes you happy to feel so superior to me, I’m glad I was able to add to the happiness in the world.
