Eexcellent stuff nellie !
Looking forward to hearing the rest of the story.
Edit : @nelliebly there doesn’t appear to be a link in your “Moses Smith Jr” link …
It appears to be attempting to point to this image:
which appears to be a screenshot of some of the research @nelliebly did.
Thanks, Chronos. I didn’t want anyone to just take my word for what I’d found. The same info is on at least one other genealogy site, but I didn’t post links.
Sorry about any difficulties.
Any news ?
I sent an email to the society using their website. No response yet. I would expect at least a polite form letter of refusal. I’m allowing it some time before I follow up. The web site responses may be handled by a volunteer or something they do once a month.
Curating any item is a long term commitment of resources, so they may not be anxious to accept a random bible. We shall see.
Thanks for the update.
Curious… maybe your email went to their spam folder.
Possible, but it was a hot line for donations. Without a check attached it probably got a quick delete. I’ll find a better path.
This thread popped up under Suggested Topics, and I’m curious about any updates.
Thanks for the inquiry.
I let it sit for a while in case my offer was in the que for a board or committee meeting. Apparently not. So, I need to put together a better package and send it by mail.
Curating items takes time, space and money. As interesting as the Bible is, it still may not pay it’s own way.
I sent a note to the historical society. We’ll see if they have any interest,
Looks like an automatic response, but that’s more than I got from the library:
"Thanks for contacting the Amherst Historical Society and Museum. Here is the message you sent us:
The 1733 Family Bible of Moses Smith of Shelburne MA. needs a good home. It contains pen entries of births and deaths from 1733 through ~1850 and notes regarding the Declaration of Independence and the British attack of 1775. I will package and mail the Bible at my expense. I am not asking for anything in return. I just want it to be near it’s place of origin.
If you have any interest please let me know and I will send detailed photographs for your further consideration.
We will be in touch as soon as possible!"
The plot thickens !
Stay tuned
