There’s an awful virus stagnating in my house. It felled the youngest child, then the middle one, and has finally come to rest on me. I’ve been feeling on again / off again wonky for an entire week. This past Saturday while I was out shopping I could feel myself getting sicker - sore throat, itchy lungs, etc. And now the past 2 days I’ve been in a weird haze of feverish and coughing with a bit of a GI bug thrown in. I desperately don’t want to work tomorrow but nobody else can come in. And one person CANNOT survive on the front desk along. Here’s to cough drops, a face mask, and hand sanitizer! ---

FFS. Why the fuck do sysadmins insist on using fucking arcane names for things? It’s ALWAYS either Lord of the Rings references, or, in this case, Norse Mythology. You fucking arseholes, when I want to access the instance of Rancher so I can control my Docker instances… “Yggdrasil” is NOT the first name that comes to mind. Nor, when I want to manage images that will be applied to the Docker instances, is “Nóatún” a fucking good name. Can you please leave your fantasy life at home and use a fucking sensible, boring yet practical naming convention? Most of us programmers do our best to name things in a way that will make sense; the sysadmins seem to want to make it even harder. ---

But that was better than the day the Resident IT Geek was sick and we had to find files in a hurry. They were in folders with names like “Painful Vaginal Itch”. ---

To be fair, the actual domain name doesn’t include diacriticals, but that is probably only due to incomplete support of RFC 5890. The moment _that_ is widespread we’ll start seeing Tolkien-esque runes. ---

I’ve been on both sides, and when they were hiring, my company would be thinking, “Well, we’ll be down a guy by mid-August, but it’ll help the bottom line if we don’t hire anyone til September, and maybe we should run an ad on that website, and sit around and see what happens in a week.
