Jussie Smollett (Empire) alleged hate crime attack.

Western Union,

Funny clip. That’s probably how the rehearsal went down.

The language is a disturbing reminder of the hate speech Jussie wanted to stir up.

Seems to me that his reasoning was that in real life random attacks the perps are almost never found. So he could make up an attack, and the cops wouldn’t be able to make any progress on the case.

But that’s only the case for real random attacks. The problem is that he really had all sorts of connections with his accomplices. In real cases that get solved it’s because the perpetrator had a personal connection to the victim. Pretty white girl gets killed and it’s almost always the boyfriend or the ex-boyfriend or the creepy neighbor.

So he confused the likely outcome if the attack had been real–no leads no progress–with the likely outcome of a staged attack–lots of leads, lots of connections.

Something interesting:

This hospital take HIPAA seriously.

A Cook Country grand jury has just now indicted Jussie on 16 additional counts of felony disorderly conduct for filing false police reports.

Read the bond proffer submitted by the State’s Attorney for a detailed account of what they believe happened and how they were caught.

The state certainly has a strong case. The evidence and timeline they describe seems unassailable.

Yeah, he’s toast.

It’s an amazing level of evidence against him.

Watching the news today he is still claiming innocence. I really don’t understand this strategy.

And in an odd twist to all of this are the 60+ hospital employees who got fired for accessing his medical records. Not that I condone what they did in any way but I feel a little bad for them.

CBS legal analyst Irv Miller explains Class 4 felony under Illinois Law.

He says the number of charges doesn’t effect sentencing. If one charge sticks or all 16 it’s still either probation or 1 to 3 years prison.

He also comments that in Illinois probation is the default for first time offenders.

Felons given sentences actually serve half the prison time.

btw, Irv Miller is a Chicago criminal law attorney.

His legal analysis for this case should be pretty good.

any mention of fines for wasting the city’s time?

From when this started going south I always figured that if they ever charged him it would only be if they were damn sure they had an airtight case. There is no way that the political side of it wanted it to blow up in their face with an unsucessful prosecution. Because of the publicity they would’ve just marked it as unsolved.

I truly think that he believed there wouldn’t be any or much investigation and he could just use it as publicity. He misscalculated that the publicity itself would ensure a vigorous investigation.

Best joke out there.

He’s not very smart. He’s panicked and doesn’t know what else to do so he’s doubling down on his lies. Calling it a “strategy” is being way too loose with the term.

Unless/until you get a plea deal, there’s no reason not to claim innocence. What else is he supposed to do?

I wish I’d thought of it myself.

Keep his mouth shut? If there is any chance at all that he will admit to it and take a plea then he should stop talking right now. The longer he protests his innocence the harder his image rehabilitation will be.

Well, if he doesn’t want to bury his carreer he should stop digging the hole deeper.
