When someone is acting like a jerk, it’s hurting everyone, not just you: it degrades the social value of the boards. And unless you maxed out ranks in diplomacy, and you didn’t, and obviously neither did I, you’re going to be completely ineffective at getting the person to stop being a jerk. The mods, however, CAN be effective at getting the person to stop. So if you report them, you’re taking effective action to improve the board’s social value. [/QUOTE] What I see above me as complete silliness is the suggestion that someone should feel hurt and insulted because they were called an “apologist.” _That’s_ goddamn silly. Even more silly than that is the idea that some other adult should call in a third or fourth adult to admonish the first for calling someone an “apologist.” It moves into rank absurdity when a fifth adult cries ongoing, perpetual, everlasting foul if there ends up being no admonition, or insufficient admonition, or admonition that is just not exacting enough, of the user of the insult “apologist.” If all of this back and forth boo-hooing about who got in trouble and who didn’t is mature and desireable, I’m in the wrong fucking classroom. Ignoring the use of the insulting word “apologist” in the first fucking place would have saved all of the ensuing silliness. Except of course for the one crying ongoing, perpetual, everlasting foul. That pussy is going to do that forever, no matter what. ---

But I’d keep the backhanded stuff: calling somebody an apologist is substantive and not wholly _ad hominen_. Whether it’s good form is another matter – frankly I think that depends upon circumstance. Heck, I haven’t seen any evidence in this thread that **xtisme** is or is not an Iraqi War apologist. Hypothetically, one could think that the war is misguided and still oppose anti-war arguments on their technical merits. The intellectual fortitude of someone like that might be questioned though. ---
