Well, I submitted my PhD dissertation this morning! Now I am finally “Dr.” (at least I will be in March when the degree is officially conferred). Now I am off to buy a bottle of 15 year old Laphroaig to celebrate. Dr. MM ---

Well, the glow (and the scotch) has worn off and i’m back to work. Cranky: No, I haven’t forgottin how to enjoy life; I actually liked my graduate experience (for the most part). This is due to having a great and very supportive major advisor, and the way the grad program requirements are structured here. We are allowed to string together journal articles for our diss (3 is usual), so all I had to do was make the formatting consistent and adda table of contents. Since my committee members had already read the chapters when I submitted them for publication, they barely glanced at the dissertation; once my advisor signed it they just signed off as well. ---

I was at a meeting in crete this summer and one of the participants penned an entire “Wolbachia” song, with music, and sung it at the end of her talk (it was toward the end of the meeting)! Congrats, **Mozman**. I just finished mine, too (and, in fact, worked out the exact same as yours–3 published papers, reformat for the Grad School, and then "defend) and graduated this past December, so I’m officially “Dr. Pantellerite” now. Here’s my question for you: How are you dealing with the “awkward phase”? As soon as the last two papers had been accepted, I filed for defense, flew to Texas, defended, and that was that. And then… I still had to wait two months until the graduation, so all the work was done but–could I come back and call myself “Dr.”? Sure, I’d defended and it was ALL done, but… graduation was still a couple of months away. Most everybody started to address me as “Dr.” (appropriate, because I am University faculty), but it was kind of awkward when they did, because I didn’t _really_ have it yet. Before the defense, of course, I’d correct them and give them a lengthy explanation (well, I’m still waiting for the editor of the journals to finalize the acceptance, blah, blah, blah); after, I didn’t correct them, but felt kinda icky in not doing so. What was I asking? Ah, yes… you have even longer to wait for it to be official than I did; is it awkward for you, or are you just going with it? (FTR, as a bona-fide Ph.D., I consider you “Dr.” since you defended… why wait?) ---

Pantellerite- Since I literally submitted 2 days ago, the awkwardness hasn’t really had a chance to show itself yet. I don’t have a problem referring to myself as “doctor”, although on job applications I will give the official date that the degree will be conferred. MM ---
