See, that’s a stupid attitude. Expressing it twice doesn’t change that (I know, server glitch–I can make jokes even when I’m cross). First of all, I’m not _un_happy here. Is _dis_happy a word? If not it, it should be because it fits perfectly. But, even if I _was_ unhappy here, why is leaving the only sensible alternative? Why can’t I try to change things for the better? Hmm? You really think it’s better to just STFU and go away than to stay and fight to improve things? Really? Did it ever occur to you that there might be plenty of things here I _do_ like and think are worth staying around for? Think about that. ---

I wouldn’t put you in the same category as **Oakminster** and **I Love…** (people who are parsing every post made about the current situation looking for new sources of outrage), but you’d know better than I whether you belong in that category or not. It completely floors me that all this idiotic drama came about because of rule changes in the Pit. Who pays that much attention to the Pit to give a shit for more than five seconds? Yes, it was an absolutely retarded move on Ed’s to make the changes the way he did. And most of the changes themselves make my brain hurt. But I’ve never looked at the Pit as anything more than a fleeting thing. The thread list only goes back like 48 hours and I can’t remember the last time someone resurrected a Pit thread to continue some long dead thread. What I postin the Pit today is forgotten by 99.99% of the board within an hour of my writing it. And I’d imagine that’s how it is for every post in the Pit. So for a sideline part of the board to cause all this gnashing of teeth just amazes me. ---

I think these people saying “just go” really, really don’t understand a couple things. 1. How hard it is to say goodbye forever to a place that’s been a great home, until recently. 2. Why many of us feel the quality of this board has been seriously degraded: not by the naughty words _which have always been here_, but by clumsy, poor thought-out rules being capriciously and unfairly enforced by egotistical administrators who refuse to listen to the people who form the community on their board, and create vaguely worded rules to correct problems that weren’t particularly a problem in the first place.\* The chilling effect on the Pit is affecting the whole board, whether you like it or not. What we’re getting is not a more “civil” board. It is not more civil. It is a little more boring, and it’s going to get a lot more boring, I expect. Stifling speech puts a damper on much more than merely the naughty words (such as "jerk and “cunt”) being directly stifled. How many times is this lesson going to have to be learned? Censorship is an ugly thing. More importantly, _what we’re getting is the loss of a large number of some of the most thoughtful and interesting posters this board has ever had_. \*In my opinion, Ed never convincingly made the case that the changes were necessary or essential. ---

On second thought, this whole thread just pisses me right off. Why should I go? Why shouldn’t I stay and have my say? I’m a long time member of this board and it means something to me. I don’t like the mess it finds itself in right now, but I’ll be damned if I am shunted away because my view is not with the majority. The Dope used to be a more freewheeling place–a place where I often was dismayed or even repulsed by what I read, but that opened up my mind and broadened my viewpoint. I am astute enough to be grateful for that. And now, for some obscure reason, TPTB decided we needed to be more like the Brady Bunch. Well, fuck that with a rusty shovel. I’m not going anywhere. And I’m not shutting up. If you don’t like what I post, express yourself about it or put me on ignore. I promise to be devastated. :rolleyes: ---

I’m glad I didn’t know at first the alleged reason for the birth of the “other” board that looks and acts so much like this one. I joined over there and have no intention of leaving here. I really don’t think that the poster-board relationship is necessarily monogamous. I have the chance to slighly alter my persona “over there” and maybe evolve into a different poster altogether. Maybe I’ll evolve here, I dunno. I just know that I have precious little time to waste posting on message boards, and SDMB and the “other” board seem to be the only two of high enough quality to merit my time. Now, I’ll have a bit of that pie, if you don’t mind. ---

What she actually said was “…get the fuck out **and don’t come back to keep us updated on how much you don’t like it here.** ” Please, don’t insult my intelligence by claiming that’s not functionally equivalent to telling someone to STFU. Also, I didn’t tell her shut up about her opinion, I told her to shut up about telling other people to shut up about theirs. Not really the same thing. At all. ---

I do not get the carping about the board going down. I have never worked in an office that did not have computer experts working full time keeping the computer system running. They just go down ,get overloaded and have mechanical failures. They get viruses. They get dated. Get over it. SDMD allots resources to upgrade and maintain. They do well enough. ---

At some point I am just repeating myself. So, there are couple dozens NEW threads by me (with input from other posters?), yet there is indeed ONE thread, which IMO, I do keep going on and on about something. I’d lean more towards Jeff’s definition of going on and on than QED’s… ---

I guess I’m with **Justin Bailey** on this one. I think the stuff that started all this was quite possibly foolish and ill-thought. But I think all the stuff that is stemming from it and the huge ruckus that is now going on because of it… …is foolish and ill-thought. Both parties are going about all this in the wrong ways and this is the result. ---
