# Just heard on the news: "A matador was fatally killed...."

I don’t want this to turn into a discussion about bullfighting; my point is, is there any other way to be killed?

Maybe the newscaster though Barrio was in the fetal position when he got gutted? Fetally killed.
Both sports comentary and medical reports can be funny, even when it’s not a gaffe. Reports on the bullruns distinguish between _contusión por pisotón_ and _contusión por pisadas_: both can be translated as “bruises due to being stepped-on”, so people unfamiliar with the slang are very confused when they encounter them by the first time. The first one means the runner got stepped on by the bull; the second one, by other runners.
Another one: what Bravo suffered was _herida por asta de toro_. He was wounded by a bull’s horn. Now, while it is true that there are multiple types of horned animals that one can be wounded by, when the wound took place in a bullfighting arena the detail is kind of redundantly from the redundancy department. A related expression: people who appear to be scared of life itself are said to be afraid to die _por asta de burro_, from being wounded by a donkey’s horns.
Latin Americans find the Spanish custom to double-state adress of movement hilarious. _Baja aquí abajo_: come-down here down. _Vente pacá_: come-here to here. And so forth. We trot out our best offended hidalgo look and explain that it’s not redundant, it’s emphatic (theatrical aside to the other Spaniards, still within hearing of the Latin Americans: do you guys think they believed me?).

AP’s reporting is accurate if you only count “in the ring” as the arena itself. José Eslava Cáceres “Pepe Cáceres” (sword) died in July of 1987 from wounds incurred in the arena, Antonio González Gordon “Campeño” (_banderillero_ - the guy with the short spears) died in May of 1988 again from wounds incurred in the arena. They did not literally die in the ring, but they still were killed by the bulls they were fighting.

I’ve always thought it redundant to hear of someone interviewing the survivors of some catastrophe; who the hell else would they interview? An interview with someone who didn’t survive would be much more newsworthy.

While driving to work the other morning I heard a reporter on HLN breathlessly reporting on Sarah Silverman’s brush with death. “She had…EPIGLOTTIS!”
Holy crap, we’d better rush en masse to the emergency room, because we’ve all got that.

I was driving in the woods the other day and saw a bunch of forest roads with “No unauthorized vehicles” marked on them. I understand what they’re saying, of course, but you can’t actually drive on ANY road with a vehicle unauthorized to drive on that road…that’s what “unauthorized” means.
More snarkily, I was commenting to a friend that I was trying to get a picture of the Milky Way. The soon-to-be-ex friend, of course, said “aren’t all your pictures of the Milky Way?”

One that struck me was from a museum newsletter article about a pre-Columbian Peruvian exhibit. The author wrote something about a display of idols “depicting their imaginary gods …”. In my mind I was thinking “there’s another kind?” .

How about using “real people” in weight-loss ads?
As opposed to fake people?

My wife watched a show on the History Channel yesterday about the guys who escaped from Alcatraz in the 1960’s. I overheard when they were talking about a brother of one of the escapees and mentioned that he had been “electrocuted to death”. I had to ask my wife, “Is there any other way to be electrocuted?”.
