To gleefully and joyously and with reckless abandon split infinitives is perfectly OK. It is a grammar rule that has always because of monkish latin prudes been imposed upon a language where to freely with words and even claused interject has in linguistic history by the natives always been permitted. The whole \_\_\_\_\_ nazi thing is way overdone (think soup, femi) and lame. Personally I loathe people pointing out others spelling mistakes. It’s akin to the know-it-all kid in school yelling “Teacher! You forgot to give us homework!” except spelling fetishists don’t have the threat of being beat up later on. 😉 I can see how it’s important to some people and that’s cool, have impeccably styled posts but let others have their right to be casual, as long as the message is getting across. If I had my way I’d bitchslap everyone who used shortforms like “IMHO” and “IANAL” but who cares, it’s so trivial. ---

I find bad spelling and grammar annoying but I usually try not to police it unless it’s truly egregious or the person is a prick. I certainly don’t support any “final solutions” in regards to bad spellers. Leet speakers is a whole different matter. ---

When it’s a person that is obviously intelligent it’s really annoying. It’s like someone going out with soup on their tie or something. It smacks of laziness and carelessness. And a person can usually tell if the poster normally knows how to spell a word correctly and has just either made a typo, or sleepily used the wrong word (their for they’re for instance). People wouldn’t accept incorrectly done math, or an unsubstantiated fact, and shrug it off and to some of us, english, and improper typing and spelling are just as “cringeworthy”. But like **DtC** says, I don’t normally say anything unless the person is otherwise a jerk and an idiot. (btw, My typing skills DO suck :D, thank goodness for spell check) ---

Um, hello, **CanvasShoes** , I think you must be my lost twin, kindly posting what I should have posted earlier, had my snail-speed computer allowed me. I think it is a particularly valid point that one _can_ usually guess (for want of a better word) whether strange spellings are caused by dyslexia, or perhaps eyesight difficulties, or by ignorance of, and disregard for, correct spelling. I had also intended to refer to the parallel with maths; knowing I am stupid anywhere near numbers, I would check, and/or use a calculator, and therefore don’t see why some people won’t do likewise with language. Yes, I _know_ we all make typos, and sometimes fail to check, but there just do seem to be people who never do, which I think arrogant and somehow disrespectful to their fellow posters. (And of course, I have just sentenced myself to about a month of making terrible typos, all from that well-known German town of Bad Karma.) ---

But seriously… This isn’t an English course and you’re not the instructor. If you disagree with a post, argue the point, don’t sit back and critique the delivery. The whole point of posting on SDMB is to enjoy yourself. If I were writing for school or work I would proof read my posts before submitting them, but I’m not. When someone misses the entire point of a post and goes about picking at things you’re aware of, it takes the fun out of it. If you don’t want to be called a spelling Nazi, then ignore the mistakes. My train wreck wasn’t written well and neither is this, but if you want to argue about minutia and then complain when you get called on it, you aren’t having fun either. So stop. If the whole point of a post of mine is missed, of course, I’m going to troll. If it gets me kicked off I’ll miss the SDMB, but… The point is when you critique the delivery and not the message, you’re not proving yourself superior because of your knowledge of rules we all know, you’re showing that you’re not able to make a relevant point against it without doing so. ---

Half the time when I see someone nitpick another’s spelling, I immediately get reminded of a kid I went to middle school with. He’d “correct” my handwriting, citing that I was misusing capitalization by deciding to write my lower case letters with small caps. This is a perfectly legible form, and he _insisted_ on crossing out every single one of my Rs and Ns with a slash and replacing them with his form of undercase equivalents. After a week of this, I told him to fuck off when he offered to “grade my quizzes” when we were to trade in class. Of course, he told on me for using the word “fuck,” but the teacher told him to stop being an ass. ---

If you’re posting in a debate, and you make a simple mathematical or similar small factual mistake, even if they don’t affect the argument, you’re going to get called on it, and that’s just fine and dandy. Most of us appreciate getting the correct info. To some of us, people who are otherwise perfectly intelligent and capable of spelling and writing well, but just “slop it up” are being amazingly lazy, and careless, and that is a bit ignorant and arrogant. Not the folks with dylexia or for whom english is a second language. Or the aforementioned obvious typos or “sleepios” (and hopefully not my "I just got a tiny laptop and need to cut my fingernails"os :D). We mean those that make the same lazy mistakes over and over. To some of us that’s just as “ignorant” as some of the other "sins’ on this board.
