Grr, hit supmit instead of tab. FTR, I don’t go around correcting people’s spelling, unless they’ve already proven themselves to be idiots, and/or jerks. But my point, regarding your point was that, on a board dedicated to fighting ignorance, if you’re going to “call people on” small errors of math and so on, then it should be JUST as okay to call people on laziness regarding the use of the language as well. If a specific person doesn’t have a good command of the englsh language for whatever reason, then that’s one thing. But for a person to excuse out and out laziness is akin to someone refusing to provide accurate information. It’s sloppy and lazy. It’s a double standard to demand that posters “meet the standards of the SDMB” regarding math or other “cites” but not in the basic language. IMHO. ---

Hmmm… you still don’t see it do you canvas? It bothers you that people can’t command the English language. It bothers me that people miss the point of posts. By the way, your argument attributing the same qualities to math and language is very incorrect. Math uses symbols to represent an absolute knowledge. Language doesn’t express an absolute knowledge and is, therefore, inherently different. ---

Hoookay… Well, anyway, I’d like to add a vote to the “get it right, Sylvester” camp, along with a nod to the “he who nitpicks is a nit” school of thought. It’s one thing to miss a couple of words or drop a little punctuation; what amazes me are the posters on other boards (not the SDMB) who simply have not acquired use of the English language. Rife with errors, full of misappropriated vocabulary - and somehow they always seem to bring Jesus into the situation. It’s like, people, if you’re going to call on the Lord, could you please at least capitalize him. ---

I’m currently resisting the temptation to go through this thread and count instances of **Gaudere’s Law** in action. However, the pedants among you might enjoy [this book](http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1861976127/026-6522652-2382039), which advertises itself as “The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation”. The problem, of course, is that the people who read it don’t need it, and the people who need it won’t read it. ---

It wasn’t even me they were addressing on the other board; I almost never reproach people for their spelling or grammatical errors. But the fact is, everyone perceives this thread as complaining about bad spelling and grammar, so whatever. But to answer your question, the fact is, almost every time you see a poster with bad grammar and spelling, and I mean consistently bad spelling and grammar, and it is so bad that other start to get on their case, (a) they get really defensive, rather than (b) take a little advice and learn, which © shows why their use of written English is so shitty, and (d) those mental deficits… laziness, resistence to criticism, and refusal to learn, (e) are also manifest in their so-called “arguments.” If you take care in your arguments, then it is reflected in your spelling and grammar. But I never intended this thread to be about bad grammar and spelling. It is ABOUT calling people “Nazis” because they dare to SUGGEST something to you. The Nazis killed 11,000,000 people. Have smoking Nazis killed anyone? Feminazis? Spelling Nazis? ---
