You could argue a sequel to X-Men wasn’t approved, but you can definitely see that Bryan Singer undoubtedly planted seeds of what he wanted to happen in a sequel if it went ahead.
Wolverine’s origins, an attack on the School, and the introduction of specific characters were clearly being hinted at deliberately.
But he didn’t have approval, a script, or a solid lock on which actors he’d want to return.
Interestingly, from what I can tell from the extras on X2, it seems Bryan Singer may want to return to Direct number three after all, even though he initially said he wouldn’t. We shall find out for certain soon, I guess.
X2 was awesome, but not the first sequel, I vote for the Godfather part 2. And please, no one mention the purported third part, I still matain it doesn’t exist.
I rambled. I blame it on the sleep. I’m still rambling… dagnabit
I’ve heard noise about X-Men 3 coming in 2006, to be directed by Bryan Singer again. I know Anna Paquin and the kids playing Iceman and Pyro will definitely be back (their contract was for three movies), and probably Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Famke Janssen, Alan Cumming, and Hugh Jackman too.
Bah. Best Sequel goes to Gremlins 2. Blew the first out of the water, and it wasn’t part of a planned trilogy!
X-Men 2 was okay. It entertained me for a few hours, and didn’t threaten to put me to sleep like The Two Towers did. (Not that it wasn’t a good movie! It was just a long one.) Those holding out for Halle Berry may have hope - a little birdy’s told me how much Gothika sucked. Maybe a failure to introduce herself into Top Billing Stardom would change Berry’s mind about a third X-Men. Shrug.
A totally agree, Jonny Depp would kick arse as Gambit! I heard Gothika wasn’t great either but as I recall her issue with Xmen was that her character didn’t get enough screen time and wasn’t represented the way she wanted Storm to be. Personally, I like storm in the comics and I don’t like her in the movie. She is supposed to be more of a mother, advice giving, yet really strong character. Oh well shrug
While X-Men 2 was certainly a great comic book movie, I would argue that Spider-Man was even better, and Daredevil and the first X-Men didn’t exactly suck, either. But it is significant in demonstrating that Marvel is capable of making good comic book movies fairly consistently. Out of the five recent Marvel movies, we’ve had two excellent, two good, and only one stinker, which is a pretty good track record as far as movies go.
And I don’t see a big problem with Halle Berry’s acting, but if for some reason you don’t like it, there’s always the mute button.
Johnny Depp would be awesome as Gambit. Beast had a brief cameo in X2 I would like to see him back in a larger role. Marrow would be a cool as either a villan or X-man.
In the DVD commentaries, it was considered to give Marrow a cameo, specifically when the mutants were attacked by Styker on a Global scale, but dropped due to budgetary reasons.
If Johnny Depp played Gambit I’d pass out. It’s funny, I don’t really find Johnny Depp attractive, but I lust for the characters he portrays (well, Ichabod Crane, the Inspector in From Hell, and Captain Jack Sparrow, at least - only Johnny Depp characters I’ve sene recently).
Long as it’s still got Hugh Jackman running around lookin’ all hot, I’ll see it more than once, I promise. However, if he doesn’t do the movie, or suffers major acid burns in the meantime, chances are much slimmer.
What? Where? (Use a spoiler box if you need it.) I still have the DVD in the player and don’t remember Beast. Colossus was fun to see (though he really should’ve had a thick accent). But I don’t remember Beast.
I also did a happy-dance at the prospect of the Phoenix Saga.
SpoilerISH I guess but nothing major*
Dr Henry McCoy was being interviewed on TV in the bar where Mystique picks up the security guard. He wasn’t blue and furry yet though.
Also I read an interview with Singer where he notes Angel and Marrow did have cameos in the movie…in x-ray form at Weapon X.
In the bar where Mystique met up with a security guard from Magneto’s prison, the tv was tuned to CNN or another like station. The talking head saying “why stop with registration? Why not round them up and put them in a camp?” or some such was labeled Dr. Henry McCoy.
I think you’re forgetting Superman 2 here, which also belongs on the list of sequels that surpassed their high quality predecessors. I’d also add Bride of Frankenstein to that list.
The best movie adapted from a comic book is Ghost World.
Ah, that explains how I missed it. My attention was diverted from the screen during that scene as I was rummaging through the firdge.
I didn’t really like Nightcrawler. I mean the make-up was okay (he should’ve looked more like felt or velour, though I understand how tough that would have been). I just didn’t like Alan Cumming. Didn’t have the Nightcrawler feel to him.
Okay, maybe I’m an old fuddy-duddy comic fan but, who the heck is Marrow? and why is Gambit such an important charactor for you young 'uns? I saw him once or twice and I’ll be honest, I did not see much apeal in his chractor or powers or look. Clue me in please.
Loved both movies, BTW.
Also, another great sequel that possibly surpasses the first movie: From Russia With Love.
