My plan for proposing to my girlfriend worked beautifully. She began thinking that she’d be getting a ring, so I had to throw her off the scent. I bought her a scarf from Gap. Christmas Day was spent with her, her brother, her mom and her mom’s boyfriend. I played the role of Santa. I handed all the presents out, and then I gave her my present last, the scarf. She opened it, half expecting the ring to be in the box. Nope, wasn’t there. That was met with the response of, “Thanks for the scarf, baby.” sounding more like, “Gee, thanks, cheapass, just what I need, a scarf I’ll never wear.” It all got caught on tape. Priceless. I stand up, look under the tree and say, “Looks like that’s all the presents. Except this one.” As I drop to my knee, I pull out the box with the ring, which I’d been hiding in my pocket, and ask her if she’ll marry me. She instantly bursts into tears and turned red. This had caught her totally off guard. It worked out well. Not a dry eye in the house. I even shed a couple. Then as I hug her, I look to the camera with my Santa hat tilted, wink and give the thumbs up. We’ll be getting married Nov 30, 2002. ---

Congrats! That story reminds me of when my brother proposed to his then-girlfriend (now his wife). It was at Christmas, and he took her out to dinner. He hired a guy to dress up in a Santa suit, and pass out candy canes to _all_ the restaurant patrons (yes, my brother also knew the restaurant proprietor). Santa got to my brother’s table, and did the obligatory “have you been good this year” thing to my brother, then turns to his girlfriend and says “young lady, I hear that you have been _very_ good this year, so I have a special candy cane for you!” He reached in to his bag and pulled out one of those giant candy cane sticks, and tied to it with a ribbon was an engagement ring. As my brother’s girlfriend stared at it in shock, my brother got down on one knee, right there in the restaurant, and proposed. The whole restaurant cheered. A friend of my brother’s was in a booth close by, and got the whole thing on video. It is SO cool, and definitely a tear-jerker. Congratulations again, Brood, and may your whole marriage be as romantic as when you proposed. 🙂 ---
