Loser… I love that song, plus any number of others Beck has done over the years. Odelay is one of the most perfect albums ever produced. I’m afraid I can’t name a single ditty by Kanye so my perception of the legitimacy of his little rant will likely be somewhat predictable, not to mention the fact he apparently is incapable of learning from his mistakes. ---

When you have the mic you have the floor, the man should have used it. “Beck. They said, ‘Beck’. It doesn’t even sound like Kanye. Are you hard of hearing?” If nothing else the announcers next year need to make some fun of him. ---

There seems to be a good deal of this here. I play several instruments, but the ability to play doesn’t matter to me. Kanye is a great producer who has written and produced some fantastic albums. He’s easy to hate, but cat’s got talent. ---

He thinks the Grammys is ‘playing’ him and Beyonce? Don’t they both have 20 or so Grammys? I bet a lot of artists would love to get played like that! ---

His argument is, IIRC, that those Grammys are in the specific categories of “Best Rap Album” or “Best R&B Song”, in essence they are ghettoized into their own awards, so they don’t complain when they don’t win the big ones. I’m not saying that Kanye is 100% correct on it (but he may be like… at least 50% correct on it), but I believe that is what his beef is. ---

The all-time greats like Crosby, Sinatra, etc. are all-time greats not just because they had great voices, but because they sang great songs. Nobody can say that, e.g. Mariah Carey hasn’t been successful, but I have to wonder how much better she might have been if she had sung really great songs, instead of her own mediocre songs. ---

Beyonce is listed as writer for everyone one of her songs on her latest album (Beyonce). And as the first listed writer on some big hits - Drunk in Love, Partition, & Flawless. ---

Au contraire. Music has no credibility when it’s a product made by calculating professionals, and designed to be as slick/pretty/catchy as possible. [It was quite a victory when, in Sarah Vowell’s inimitable words, Nirvana, “a group [band] with loud guitars and louder drums knock[ed] the whimpering Mariah Carey off the top of the charts.”](http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/books/review/17VOWELL.html?pagewanted=print&position=&_r=0) Of course, that does raise the specter of what happens when something gets too popular to be good, but that’s a topic for another time. Even so, I have distinctly fond memories of being ready early in the morning before my father would take me to middle school, and turning on MTV and seeing “Loser” (and The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Disarm”, and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Creep”, and Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box”) and being genuinely rattled by this stuff. This clearly wasn’t the kind of slick pop (of any era) I would hear in my parents’ cars.
